Imprisonment
By Maureen Okon
Abuja April 25, 2017 (NAN) A Grade 1 Area Court, Kado, Abuja, on Tuesday sentenced one Usman Hamza, 21, to five months imprisonment for stealing PVC building pipes.
Hamza of no fixed address was arraigned on a charge of theft.
The presiding judge, Alhaji Ahmed Ado, warned the convict to desist from committing crimes, adding that the sentence would serve as deterrent to other would-be offenders.
Before the judgment, Hamza had pleaded guilty to the charge and prayed the court to temper justice with mercy.
He blamed his action on prevailing economic recession.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Judith Obatomi, had told the court that Hamza was arrested by a police patrol team attached to Life Camp Police Station, Abuja, on April 20.
Obatomi said that on that same date, the convict stole 15 pieces of PVC pipe at Emab plaza, Abuja and he was arrested at Life Camp junction on his way to Karmo, an Abuja suburb.
“During police investigation, he could not give satisfactory reason for being in possession of the PVC pipe, and it was recovered,’’ he said.
The prosecutor said that the offence was punishable under Sections 287 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
