Uyo, March 4, 2020 (NAN) The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Akwa Ibom chapter, has advocated the establishment of a pension commission in the state.

The state Chairman of the union, Mr Ekpenyong Ekpo, made the call during the South-South zonal meeting of the union held in Uyo on Wednesday.

Ekpo said the creation of the commission would afford all pensioners in the state the opportunity to know where they could channel their various problems to.

He said that the commission would also be a platform on which individual problems of the members could be discussed and handled with urgency.

He said that the creation of the commission would equally save government the embarrassment of misinformation often received on pension issues.

“The non-implementation of all the increases is not because government has no money to pay, but because there is will to do so.

“It is also because there is no specific entity to cater for the welfare of pensioners in Akwa Ibom state.

“It is on this ground that we earnestly appeal to the state government to create Akwa Ibom State Pension Commission for all the pensioners in the state,’’ Ekpo said.

The chairman suggested that if created, the commission should have four departments.

Ekpo named them as Department of Local Government Pensioners, Department of Retired Primary School Teachers, Department of Parastatal Pensioners, and Department of Contributory Pensioners.

He added that the commission should have a Chairman while each department should be managed by a Commissioner or a Director. (NAN)
