Man, 30, docked for alleged arson, unlawful damage

Badagry (Lagos State), March 5, 2020 (NAN) A 30-year-old man, Michael Oniyide, was on Thursday docked before a Badagry Magistrates’ Court for allegedly set fire on a dwelling house and damaged property valued at N610, 000.

Oniyide, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge bordering on malicious damage.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Prosecutor, ASP. Nkem Ukor, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Feb. 27 at 2.00p.m at Falola Sea Beach area of Seme Border, Lagos.

Ukor said the defendant unlawfully set ablaze the house of the complainant, Mr Noah Dogbena.

“Oniyide criminally and maliciously damaged four pieces of big size coolers, three pieces of medium size coolers, seven pieces of rubber set, three bags of clothes belonging to the complainant.

“Others items destroyed by the fire include items belonging to his children, motorcycle and some household electronics and accessories.

“The fire also burnt N160, 000 cash that was kept in the house, all amounting to N610, 000,” the prosecutor said.

Ukor said the offences contravened Sections 341 and 339 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Magistrate, Mr Patrick Adekomaiya, granted the defendant bail of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Adekomaiya adjourned the case until March 30 for mention. (NAN)
