Armed militias kill 22 in eastern Congo

Killing

Johannesburg, April 13, 2020 (dpa/NAN) Armed militias killed at least 22 people in Eastern Congo, a civil society leader reported on Monday.

The attacks took place in two places in eastern Ituri province on Sunday night.

The attackers first killed 20 people with machetes in the village of Ndoki-Koli, before killing two more residents in a neighbouring village.

“Several others were injured, others were kidnapped by the militiamen, who also took 100 goats with them,” said Charite Banza, the head of the local civil society organisation.

Another attack was directed against a village north-west of the town of Bunia, where soldiers and residents were able to drive the attackers away.

Eastern Congo has been unstable for years. Several armed groups are active there, most of them concerned with controlling valuable natural resources. (dpa/NAN)
