Yenagoa, Aug. 7, 2017 (NAN) A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Robert Sunday Iworiso Foundation in Bayelsa said it has concluded preparations to organise an essay writing competition for secondary school students in the state.
The Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Mr Michael Afenfia, said at a news conference in Yenagoa on Monday that 100 students would be selected from public and private schools for the completion.
Afenfia said the winner of the competition would go home with a sum of N1 million and other consolation prizes.
The Chairman said the competition scheduled to hold from Aug. 22 to Aug. 23, was targeting students in the Senior Secondary School (SSS 3) category, for this year, while it is expected to expand from the next edition.
He said that the theme of the competition is, “Good Leadership: A Prerequisite for Global Relevance” is being organized in collaboration with the Bayelsa Ministry of Education and Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA).
Afenfia, who, is the Speech Writer to Bayelsa Governor, Seriake Dickson explained that, out the 100 students, 20 would be selected from the private schools across the state.
Mr John Iworiso, Director of the Foundation, said the competition was aimed at discovering and nurture gifted young students in the state and encourage them to fulfill their potentials.
“The competition is one of the several ways through which we hope to discover untapped talents from the creeks and farmlands of Bayelsa to the rest of the world.
“We want to engage and inspire these young minds to see themselves as change agents and the true leaders of tomorrow that they are.
“It is important to state that, with all that has befallen us as a people, education remains the key to the survival and liberation to the Niger-Delta,”the Director said.
Mr Bina Illagha, Bayelsa ANA Chairman, urged students across the state to tap and key into the opportunity and build their academic career. (NAN)
