Ilorin, Feb.14, 2017 (NAN) An Ilorin based legal practitioner, Mr James Arogun, says strict compliance with democratic principles will hinder the fight against corruption in the country.
Arogun expressed this view on Tuesday in Ilorin in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
According to him, democracy cannot be a veritable tool in fighting graft as it has been abused by corrupt minded persons in the society.
The lawyer said though the current administration had made the anti-corruption fight a top priority, democracy, however, had been the biggest obstacle in achieving the set goal.
“Democracy has frustrated President Muhammadu Buhari’s efforts to stop corruption as every politician now runs to court for safety when they perpetuate evil.
“The rich will employ the services of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN), as many as they can afford and in the process they stall the trials and subsequently frustrate the whole process.
“Democracy is too soft to counter corruption as many politicians now believe they have the right to go to court and clear their names even when it is evident that they are guilty,’’ Arogun said.
He called on the Federal Government to emulate countries like South Korea, China and Saudi Arabia; where corruption was being fought by employing very strict measures.
“It is time to be strict on corruption. Anybody caught in the act should be hanged to death,” said the lawyer. (NAN)
