Man gets N200,000 bail over alleged N49,500 theft

Ikeja, May 20, 2019 (NAN) An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Thursday granted N200,000 bail to a 28-year-old electrician, Femi Coker, whi allegedly broke into a shop and stole items worth N49,500.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Olufunke Sule-Amzat, also ordered that the defendant should provide two sureties as part of his bail conditions.

Sule-Amzat said the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of tax payment to Lagos State Government.

The defendant is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, burglary and stealing, but he pleaded not guilty.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Benson Emuerhi, told the court that the defendant, a resident of Salami Street, Ajuwon, Akute in Ogun, committed the offences with some other persons still at large on May 20 at midnight at No. 9, Olorunsola Jagundeyi St., Ayobo, a suburb of Lagos.

Emuerhi alleged that the defendant broke into the shop of the complainant, Mrs Kikelomo Rasaq, and stole a bag containing N49,000 and five Big Cola drinks valued at N500,00.

“He broke into the shop through the ceiling and made away with the  items,’’ he said.

According to him, the defendant was apprehended by some security guards who handed him over to the police in  Ayobo.

The alleged offences contravened Sections 280 (1), (b), 287, and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 provides for a three-year jail term

The court adjourned the case until July 22 for mention. (NAN)
