Group begins sensitisation workshop on drug abuse in Daura LG

Daura (Katsina State)April 19 2019 (NAN) A Daura based NGO known as Movement for Patriotic Citizens of Nigeria (MFPCN), has begun a one day sensitisation workshop on the dangers of drug abuse among the youth.
Alhaji Yau Umar Gwajo Gwajo, the former speaker of the Katsina House of Assembly and chairman of the occasion declared the workshop open in Daura on Friday.
He lamented the rampant instances of drug abuse and other narcotic substances especially in Northern part of Nigeria.
He cautioned the youth against the dangers and consequences of abuse of drugs, stressing that most of the crimes being committed and other cases of mental retardation were as a result of drug abuse.
He advised the youth to be be extra careful and avoid bad company for prosperous and brighter future.
According to him, the people of the state are eternally grateful that the state government has put in place mechanisms that will put to check the menace of drug abuse .
Gwajo Gwajo lauded the efforts of NDLEA and the relevant security agencies in detecting and arresting both the drug barons and those who engaged in abusing drugs.
He promised that the people of Daura would continue render moral support in fighting the ugly trend.
Sheikh Ibrahim Murtala, a renowned Islamic preacher, described the rampant instances of drug abuse among the youth as unfortunate and a disaster that called for concerted efforts by all stakeholders in combating it.
The cleric quoted relevant verses of the Holy Quran and tradition of prophet Muhammad which prohibit consumption of any intoxicant, stressing that God will punish those who flagrantly abuse drugs.
Murtala called on parents to keep watch on their children by maintaining vigilance especially on the groups they mingled or associated with as peer group influence played a vital role in socialisation process.
In his remarks, Alhaji Abba Mato, the Chairman of Daura council, lauded the efforts of the group for organising such important workshop stressing that the meeting was both desirous and timely.

He assured that the council would continue to support such groups with a view to completely rid the entire community of drug abuse.
“I am very happy to inform you that we have minimal cases of abuse in drugs,’’ he stated.
Highlights of the event were paper presentations, drammatic shows and Islamic lectures on the danger and consequences of drug abuse.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the presidential advisory committee on drug abuse headed by Brig-Gen Buba Marwa was recently in Daura to sensitise the people on the dangers of drug abuse.(NAN)
