Architect seeks policies to boost infrastructural development

Lagos, May 6, 2017 (NAN) An Architectural expert, Mr Samson Akinyosoye, has advised the Federal Government to formulate policies that would facilitate the general development of infrastructure in the country.
Akinyosoye, the Executive Secretary, Nigeria Institute of Architects (NIA), Lagos Chapter, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos.
He said that all sectors of the economy, particularly the property, require basic infrastructure to grow.
According to him, the infrastructure like good transport network, security, electricity, credit facilities are needed to enhance the development of the property industry.
He said that provision of adequate housing programme for the populace had been a critical challenge to the government.
“The phenomenal rise in population and rapid increase in size of most Nigerian cities have led to acute shortage of decent and affordable houses.
“They have also led to diverse urban problems, ranging from overcrowding, poor environmental living conditions, inadequate infrastructures and homelessness.
“There is, therefore, the need for the government through appropriate strategies, ensure optimum utilisation of existing resources/infrastructure,’’ he said.
Akinyosoye said a responsive policy must be in consonance with the existing national and socio-economic realities of the country in order to achieve sustainable development.
According to him, the existing policies should be strengthened to ensure adequate infrastructural development alongside housing delivery and the overall urban development.
He said that certain parameters should be considered to form the basis of the type of policy required to enhance infrastructural development that would meet the housing needs of the people.
“Such parameters includes an overhaul of the economy, a review of the nature and size of households and a review of other economic variables that can promote housing delivery,’’ he said. (NAN)
