By Dorcas Jonah Abuja, May 3, 2017 (NAN) The Nigeria Association of Women in Sports (NAWIS) on Wednesday called for more slots for women in the board of National Sports Federations.
Florence Adeyanju, a former president of the association made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
Adeyanju, who is the founder of the association, said that international standard stipulates 30 per cent representation of women in sports.
She, however, said that a slot had been allotted to women in the board
“We thank God for the opportunity given to women to have at least a member in the board.
“What is expected in the international level is 30 per cent. What we have is far below, but we will get there one day,’’ she said.
According to her, since most board members are men, we need our people there and that is why we want to have a representative for each sport on the board.
“Our task is that they should represent us well, make positive impact at the grassroots, national and international level,’’ she said.
Adeyanju said that NAWIS representatives at the board would be expected to go to schools and talk to girls to participate in schools sports.
“We must see their activity, our focus is on the development of the girl child in sports,’’ she said. (NAN)
