Lagos, Jan. 13, 2017 (NAN) An educationist, Mr Augustine Agali, has advised parents to hand down sex education to their children and wards to check the increasing incidence of rape and sexual harassment in schools.
Agali told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos that school management should create time during school hours to engage students in sex education.
He said it was important for schools and parents to play their roles in the socialisation of pupils and students with a view to checking the ugly trend in the country’s education system.

“It is a professional misconduct for any teacher at all, no matter his or her status, to lure children into sexual affairs.
“But because it is already happening, I will suggest that the parents should talk to their female children to report cases of anybody trying to harass them in one way or the other or trying to touch their private part.
“Then, the school management, they should equally take-up the fight from there and educate the children the same way.
“Sex education is important at this point in time so that these children don’t wallow in ignorance.
“If they wallow in ignorance, just biscuit or sweet can lure the child and eventually the destiny will be destroyed.
“So the school management should equally talk to the students and children under their care and give them lessons on sex education.
“And they should equally provide suggestion box in strategic places within the school compound so that children, students in primary school or secondary school, they should write information and throw into that suggestion box.
“Even if they don’t put their names, they should write the names of any person that is harassing sexually, so that those things can be taken off by the school management.’’

The educationist advised parents and guardians to begin to engage their children and wards on sex related issues as soon as they reached adolescence.

“The school system, particularly in secondary school, we have children in their puberty stage and adolescence.
“So at this point in time, that is a stage that children have to be protected from being harassed sexually.
“And any teacher, who is a danger to the system, should not be left in the system at all, even a day longer.
“Such culprits should be arrested and the government should take up the fight from there.’’
