I-G challenges arrest, imprisonment order by court
“If at the end of the three months, the contemnor remains recalcitrant and still refuses to purge his contempt, he shall be committed for another period and until he purges his contempt,” the court held.
The I-G’s committal followed a suit that was filed by a police officer, Mr Patrick Okoli, who was unlawfully and compulsorily retired from the Nigerian Police Force.
Justice Olajuwon noted that though the Police Service Commission, PSC, recommended Okoli’s reinstatement into the police, a decision that was affirmed by the court, the I-G refused to comply with the order.
The court had also ordered payment of N10 million to the applicant, being special and general damage for the unlawful, illegal and unconstitutional denial of his rights and privileges as a Senior Officer of the Nigeria Police Force from 1993 till date.
COAS tasks military officers on integrity, worthy character
Integrity
By Monday Ijeh
Abuja, Dec. 1, 2022 (NAN) The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt.- Gen. Farouk Yahaya has urged the 2022 Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) of the Nigerian Army Merit Awardees to be ambassadors of integrity and worthy character.
Farouk said this on Thursday in Abuja at the presentation of the 2022 edition of TRADOC’s award to commands and military officers who excelled in various examinations conducted in 2022.
“It is good that you are being recognised and awarded for good because you have done well but you must also note that, you have brought yourselves to limelight.
“People have gathered here to clap for you and you must note that you cannot but choose to improve why you are being celebrated today.
“You must strive to maintain good character and integrity because it is not all about reading and writing.
“It will be very wrong that after celebrating today, your character and integrity will be questioned tomorrow,” he said.
He said the award was part of initiatives of the Nigerian army to improve the system, acknowledge and appreciate officers who had excelled.
The COAS commended the Commander of TRADOC, Maj.- Gen. Stephenson Olabanji, for building on the foundation laid by the founding fathers of the command.
Farouk urged the commander to ensure that the criteria for the award were spelt out and made public in subsequent editions in line with the Nigerian Army best practices.
According to him, making the criteria public will guide officers to prepare for the awards and help members of staff officers to remind their commanders on why things should improve in their various commands.
In his remarks, the commander of TRADOC said the award was in line with the COAS philosophy to make reward for excellence a key driver of professionalism.
He said the 2022 edition of the award had been expanded to include the Nigerian Army Corps whose officers excelled and fall within the merit list during the various examinations conducted in 2022.
Olabanji said inclusion of the corps in the award was to encourage ownership and responsibility in the training, the career development and mentorship of the officers. (NAN)

CDS urges regional, international efforts to address security challenges in Africa
Criminals
By Monday Ijeh
Abuja, Nov. 30, 2022 (NAN) The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Lucky Irabor has called for regional and international collaboration to address the challenges of ungoverned spaces in Africa.
Irabor made the call on Wednesday in Abuja at the opening of a two-day international conference on `Africa’s Ungoverned Spaces and Regional Security: Building Resilience in Democratic Institutions’.
The CDS was represented by AVM Charles Ohwo, Chief of Policy and Plans, Nigerian Air Force.
The conference was organised by the National Defence College.
He said many scholars had adopted the term, “ungoverned Spaces” to refer to areas where land and maritime domains had little or no governance presence.
He said African countries had struggled to attain appreciable level of economic development since independence, due partly to myriads of security challenges.
According to him, the security challenges persisted because criminals have places to hibernate and operate from.
“If you move away from Nigeria to Sahel region, for instance, large terrorists exist where constitutional authorities cannot control and dominate,
“Consequently, non state actors are predominant in these areas, an indication that there are spaces to occupy with little or no resistance from constitutional authorities.
“These criminal entities that operate within and across borders require national, regional and international approaches to curtail their excesses,” Irabor said.
In his remark, the Commandant, National War College, Rear Adm. Murtala Bashir said the conference, targeted at addressing ungoverned spaces in Africa, was apt.
He said that ungoverned spaces have negative effects on regional and global security, making it easy for undocumented migrants to cross between countries. (NAN)
