Petroleum products transporters decry unpaid bridging claims, high cost of diesel
Claims
By Zubairu Idris

Kano, July 19, 2022 (NAN) The Association of Distributors and Transporters of Petroleum Products (ADITOP) has expressed dissatisfaction over unpaid bridging claims owed to members by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

Its President, Alhaji Lawal Muhammad-Zaki, made the disclosure at an awareness meeting with members on Tuesday in Kano.
He said the unpaid bridging claims was the major challenge marketers were facing in the transportation of petroleum products to different parts of the country.
Zaki , therefore urged the NMDPRA to hasten payment of all the outstanding claims to members for effective distribution of petroleum products in the country.
The president further said that the association was facing the challenge of high cost of diesel and inadequate foreign exchange rate.
“Diesel is very costly, we find it difficult to fuel our trucks to transport petroleum products to different parts of the country.
“We buy spare parts for our vehicles with foreign exchange, which is also inadequate,” he said
Also speaking, the ADITOP Consultant, Mr Maurice Ibe, stressed the importance of unity among members.
He urged members to forward their claims to enable him processed them under one umbrella
He said that the association was currently liaising with security agencies to ensure safety of drivers and their vehicles while discharging their duties.
Ibe described ADITOP as a strategic player in the oil and gas industry in the country, without which, the country would shutdown.
He urged the Central Bank of Nigeria to grant members concessional foreign exchange to boost transportation of petroleum products to all the nooks and crannies of the country.
Ibe said: ” ADITOP and the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria are being owed about N500 billion, but the NMDPRA claimed to have paid only N74 billion, which is a drop in the bucket.
“The amount is owed to individuals, but we are now taking about cooperation and unity.
“We are asking them to come as a group and speak with one voice to demand for their payments.” (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Kano bridge develops fault again

Kano bridge develops fault again
By Zubairu Idris
Kano, July 14, 2022 (NAN) The multi billion naira Ado Bayero bridge on Zaria road, Kano, has developed another fault, raising fears of traffic disruption in the area.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Federal government- owned bridge was constructed by Road construction company and commissioned in 2014.
The bridge, which links Kano with Zaria and Maiduguri roads, had earlier developed a crack which was fixed some years back.
The Supervising Engineer of the company that constructed the bridge, Mr Jibrin Sa’idu, described the fault as “Punch” which occurred on one of the lanes of the dual carriage bridge.
Sa’idu, who spoke in company of Mr Abdulsalam Dayyabu-Kurfi, representing the Federal Controller of Works in Kano, Mr Yahaya Baba-Ali, said the company would move equipment to fix the fault.
He gave an  assurance that the company would find a lasting solution to the problem.
Sa’idu wondered why the fault which exposed some layers of the bridge including the rods, should occur again, after it was rectified eight years ago.
He explained that the Punch was not an engineering defect but a fault that occurred due to prolonged tear and wear on the bridge.
In his reaction, the Federal Controller of Works in Kano state, Alhaji Yahaya Baba-Ali attributed the damage portions of the bridge to heavy trucks plying the bridge.
The Controller said security agents would be stationed at the bridge to disallow heavy trucks from plying it, to avert further damage.
He gave an assurance that the rehabilitation work on the bridge would commence as soon as possible.  (NAN)

2022 Hajj: 600 intending pilgrims from Kano State miss Hajj — Executive Secretary

Hajj: 600 from Kano State missed 2022 hajj — Executive Secretary
Pilgrims
By Zubairu Idris
Kano, July 8, 2022 (NAN) The Kano State Pilgrims Welfare Board says 600 intending pilgrims who paid for the 2022 Hajj fares through the board will not perform the pilgrimage.
The board’s Executive Secretary, Alhaji Muhammad Abba-Dambatta, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Kano.
He said that was due to the inability of the Hajj carrier to complete transportation of the pilgrims before the expiration of the deadline on closure of Saudi-Arabian airports.
Abba-Dambatta revealed that the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) allocated 2,229 hajj seats to the state for the 2022 pilgrimage.
According to him, the state proposed Max Air as carrier for the transportation of its intending pilgrims, but NAHCON approved Azman Air.
He explained further that they made several efforts to make NAHCON change the carrier, but were not successful.
Abba-Dambatta claimed that Azman Air had small aircraft that carried less number of passengers.
“Azman Air has small aircrafts that carry about 100 to 400 passengers, and spend six hours from Kano to Madina.
“The carrier did seven flights and was able to transport only about 1,690 intending pilgrims, but big aircraft carry about 500 passengers and spend four hours from Kano to Saudi Arabia.
“I, the board Chairman and the remaining staff decided to come down and allow other people to go and perform the religious obligation.
“We explained the situation to the affected people, and pray to Allah to avert future occurrence and reward all those who were unable to make it this year.
“We will be with them after the Arafat to assist them in carrying out the remaining Hajj rites,” he said.
NAN recalls that the General Manager, Azman Air, Alhaji Suleiman Lawal, had told newsmen that NAHCON gave them 14 states and the Armed Forces.
He said that, “We have finished all the states allocated to us except Kano.
“And that was because, the state rejected us initially as their carrier, that was why we decided to go to other states,” he said.
Lawal revealed that they were using two aircraft, one had 409 capacity, while the other one had 110 capacity in conducting the operations.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

By Zubairu Idris

Kano, July 5, 2022 (NAN) Kano State Pilgrims Welfare Board, has assured that it will transport 1,300 remaining state prospective pilgrims to Saudi Arabia before the closure of Jedda Airport.

The Board’s  Executive Secretary, Alhaji Muhammad Abba-Dambatta, gave the assurance on Tuesday in Kano.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 2,229 seats were allocated to the state and Azman Air was approved as the carrier of the pilgrims.

Abba-Dambatta said the delay was caused by efforts to change the carrier of the pilgrims.

“ The state government  proposed Max Air as its carrier, but National Hajj Commission assigned  Azman to transport them; all efforts to make NAHCON to change the carrier were unsuccessful,’’ he said.

According to him,  already the board has informed Governor Ganduje on the situation and he assured of meeting the President for immidiate solutions.

He further said that the remaining Kaduna State pilgrims had already departed for  Madina on Tuesday.

“We will move about 300 of our pilgrims to complete the number of passengers today,” he said.

“Two Flynas aircraft will come to Kano today, with 430 capacity each, on rescue mission to carry our pilgrims to Saudi Arabia, except those without visa,” Dambatta said.

Meanwhile, the General Manager, Azman Air, Alhaji Suleiman Lawal, said that National Hajj Commission allocated to it  14 state pilgrims and the Armed Forces as carriers.

“We have finished all the states allocated to us except Kano; it was because the state rejected us as their carrier,  so we decided to go to other states.

“We only have 115 pilgrims from Kaduna State. They will be transported together with about 300 from Kano today.

He said “NAHCON will send other flights for rescue mission to Kano to ensure that all the intending pilgrims are transported before the deadline”.

Lawal said that Azman had aircraft with capacity to move 409  and  110 in the ongoing operations.(NAN) (www nannews.ng)
