Trees

Lagos, March 27, 2018 (NAN) An environmentalist, Mr John Ekoko, on Tuesday called on Nigerians to embark on aggressive trees planting around their residential areas to curb the effect of climate change.
Ekoko, who is also a former Chairman, Nigerian Environmental Society Lagos Island Chapter (NESLIC), made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
He said the call became imperative as Nigerians no longer have the culture of planting trees.
“Our passion for trees planting has reduced. The areas where trees were planted are being destroyed for one project or the other and no effort is being made to replace them.
“This is not right as it will exacerbate the effect of climate change. So, we need to plant more trees to save our environment,” he said.
Ekoko said that trees planting would reduce the effect ozone layer has on the earth by ensuring that heat was not trapped in the atmosphere.
He said that as health inspectors go about their daily inspection of neighbourhood and premises, they should encourage people to plant trees.
The environmentalist urged them to also encourage people not to destroy or cut down the existing trees indiscriminately.
Ekoko said that trees around households would provide shed and help reduce the intense of heat.
He said that property developers and owners should adhere strictly to the approved building plans. (NAN)
