Commission tasks wealthy Muslims on prompt payment of Zakkat

Kano, April 14, 2017 (NAN) The Kano State Zakkat and Endowment Commission has called on wealthy Muslims in the state to ensure prompt payment of Zakkat for disbursement to the poor.

Zakat is the giving of alms to the poor and needy by the wealthy Muslims and its one of the five pillars of

Islam.

The Director General of the commission, Alhaji Safiyanu Gwagwarwa, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Kano.

He said the call became necessary because the month of Ramadan was fast approaching when the needy would require assistance to perform their fasting with ease.

Gwagwarwa said the commission had already mandated its Zakkat collection committee to begin preparation before the Ramadan to ensure the success of its assignment.

“The Zakkat collection Committee met yesterday to discuss ways to enhance collection as well as how to visits wealthy Muslims.

“The commission has written appreciation letters to be distributed to wealthy individuals who remained committed toward prompt payment of Zakkat.

“Prompt payment of Zakkat will enable the commission to distribute it to the needy and this will go a long way in alleviating their sufferings.

“Besides, Zakkat also checks indiscriminate begging among the less-privileged in the society, “ he said.

According to him, Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano would soon flag off the collection campaign. (NAN)
