Lagos, April 1, 2020 (NAN)  Some local councils in Lagos State on Wednesday fumigated markets, schools, health centres and streets in an effort to check coronavirus spread.

The fumigation was directed by the state government.

A  News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent, who monitored the exercise, reports that the Odi Olowo/Ojuwoye  Local Council  Development Area (LCDA) fumigated Awolowo Market on Agege Motor Road and some streets.

The exercise was conducted by the environmental health officers of the local council.

One of the officers, who pleaded anonymity, said the exercise would last for  the 14 days of the lockdown, adding that  all markets would be fumigated.

At Anjorin, Lawanson in Itire/Ikate LCDA,  fumigation was also carried out.

Mr Segun Ajiboye, Chief Environmental Officer of the council, told NAN that it  was to curtail the spread of the COVID-19.

Ajiboye said that the fumigation was carried out in markets, primary health centres, filling stations and some streets.

“The state government directed that all local governments should embark on the fumigation, and it will be for two weeks.

“The fumigation is not really harmful to human; the exercise is done on the ground to reduce the impact of virus.

“We have fumigated Ijesha Market, Baruwa Primary Healthcare (PHC), Itire PHC, Anjorin Police station, Lawanson Market and four streets,” he said.

He called on residents to adhere to the directive of the government to stay at home to reduce the spread of the virus.

Meanwhile, some of the residents said  that lack of food, water and electricity was discouraging them from  staying at home to curb COVID-19 pandemic.

President Muhammadu Buhari  had on  Sunday directed lockdown of Lagos, Ogun and Abuja for 14 days as a strategy to check the coronavirus pandemic.

NAN reports that the lockdown took effect  in Lagos State from 11p.m. on Monday

The residents, who did not mention their names, called on the state government to quickly make available to them, its proposed palliatives, adding that availability of electricity would  make them comfortable while at home.

NAN  reports that the state government is giving out food stuffs to residents of the state to cushion the effects of the lockdown. (NAN)
