Kaduna, May 9, 2018 (NAN) Sani Badayi, a Professor of Economics at the Bayero University, Kano said on Wednesday that the success of the Federal Government Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) lies in developing practical implementation strategy to drive the programme.
Badayi made the suggestion in Kaduna at the 7th International Social and Management Science Research Conference organised by the Kaduna State University (KASU).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the conference with the theme, `Issues in Economic Recovery, Diversification and Governance’ was to to appraise the country’s economic diversification programme for more effectiveness.
According to him, past economic diversification plans since 1985 failed because of improper implementation.
“Nigeria has been talking about diversification for long which has not yielded results.
“Despite the effort by the current administration to address country’s economic recession through ERGP, there is a need to follow up the program with an implementation strategy,” he noted.
According to him, focus must be geared towards addressing the power sector which remain strategic to revival of the manufacturing sector and in realizing the gains of the economic recovery and diversification plan.
He also stated that the agricultural sector must be transformed in line with modern trend in order to be a sustainable economic endeavour.
Earlier, the Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Emmanuel Chom commended the Federal Government for the various plans it evolved in order to curtail Nigeria’s dependence on oil.
He noted that the special focus on the agriculture sector was important, as it would ensure food security and reduce importation of food items.
NAN reports that the Economic Recovery Growth Plan was introduced by the Muhammadu Buhari administration as a four-year Medium Term Strategic Plan to restore national economic growth.(NAN)
