Beating

Ikeja, April 17, 2019 (NAN)The Police on Wednesday arraigned two persons who allegedly beat up a worker of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) for disconnecting their electricity supply in Lagos.
Fatimot Tijani, 40, a female trader, and Azeez Awesu, 18, male, who is a barber, were arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
They appeared before Magistrate M.O. Tanimola on a three-count charge of conspiracy, breach of peace and assault.
The defendants, who reside at Awoniyi Street, Mushin, Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty and were granted bail of N100, 000 each, with two sureties each.
Tanimola said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
She adjourned the case until April 29 for mention.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Aondohemba Koti, said that the defendants committed the offence on March 20, at their residence.
He said that the defendants and others now at large conspired to assault Mr Bankole Adekunle, an official of EKEDC, while he was performing his duty.
Koti said that the complainant was effecting a disconnection order on customers who defaulted in the payment of their bills when the defendants attacked him.
“The complainant disconnected the power supply to the defendants’ residence over huge debt.
“When he descended from the ladder, the defendants attacked him with several blows which caused some injuries to his body.
“The case was reported and the defendants were arrested,” the prosecutor said.
The offence contravened Sections 168, 172 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 172 stipulates one year imprisonment for assault, while section 411 prescribes two years for conspiracy.(NAN)
