Embrace entrepreneurship programme for self-reliance – VC advises disabled students

Keffi (Nasarawa State), July 5, 2017 (NAN) Prof. Mohammed Mainoma, the Vice Chancellor, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, has advised disabled students to embrace entrepreneurship programmes in order to become self-reliant.
He gave the advice on Wednesday in Keffi at an occasion in honour of disabled graduating students that organised by the institution’s Joint Association of Persons living with disabilities.
He said entrepreneurship would also enable them to contribute their quota to national development even in the absence of white collar jobs after graduation.
Mainoma, who was represented by the institution’s Director of Entrepreneurship Development Centre, Prof. Sam Tende, said that embracing entrepreneurship programme by the disabled students and Nigerians would enable them to acquire skills that would make them to be self-reliant after graduation especially in the face of economic recession.
The vice chancellor lauded Nasarawa State Government for giving premium to the welfare of physically challenged persons in the state and called for its sustenance.
“I urge you, other students and Nigerians at large to embrace entrepreneurship programmes so as to acquire skills that would make you to be self-reliant even in the absence of white collar job after graduation and in the face of economic recession.
“Disability is not in the physical appearance of human but the mind as they are many disabled persons who attend greatness in life, hence the need for the disabled students to work hard to realise their dreams,” he said.
Mainoma directed the institution’s Entrepreneurship Development Centre to identify all disabled persons in the university and train them towards self-reliance after graduation.
He also advised the students to take their education seriously in order to excel in life.
Mainona added that education is the bedrock of every society, hence the need for students to give it the top priority it deserved.
“It is the lead way to success in life and a route to escape from poverty and I urge the students to shun acts that are inimical to their education and future for the overall development of the state and the country,” he said.
Earlier, the President of the association, Mr Abaka Dugulu, said that they organised the occasion to thank God for protecting their lives and to appreciate the institution for giving premium to the education of disabled persons.
However, he appealed to the state government to consider more employment of the people with disabilities in the state in order to improve their lives. (NAN)
