Environmentalist cautions traders on highway

Lagos, Sept. 7, 2017 (NAN) An Environmentalist, Mrs Bisi Lawal on Thursday in Lagos State, cautioned road side traders at the Iyanoba Bus-Stop on the dangers of trading on the express road.
Lawal, who worked with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Unit said that, the activities of the traders did not only constitute menace to the area but also endangers their lives.
The officer, who was seen with her team dislodging make-shift stalls, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that vehicles with faulty brakes had killed some of the traders.
She said that the Thursday weekly sanitation in the market has been impacting positively on the environment as refuse from the markets were properly disposed off during the exercise.
According to her, the unit has the obligation of keeping the environment clean and also protect lives of residents from potential dangers.
“It is disturbing to see people being crushed by vehicles as has been the case on this spot; you can see that we are having hectic time trying to pull down the stalls close to the road.
“If you come back here in the evening you will find out that all these areas that we have cleared will be filled with all manner of stalls and tables making nonsense of our efforts,’’ Lawal said.
She noted that the area was known for heavy traffic especially in the evenings; saying that if the traders conduct themselves accordingly it would fizzle-out.
She also warned those who issue permit to the traders for a fee to desist from it as such act was escalating the situation.
Lawal further warned that defaulters would be arrested and prosecuted to serve as deterrent to others. (NAN)
