EU extends sanctions on Crimea, Sevastopol by a year

Luxembourg, June 19, 2017 (dpa/NAN) EU economic sanctions on the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, put in place after their 2014 annexation by Russia, will be extended by another year, EU Foreign Ministers decided on Monday.

The decision means that restrictions barring EU citizens and companies from investing in or importing goods from Crimea and Sevastopol will remain in place until at least June 23, 2018.

The measures ban European exports of goods and technology in the transport, telecommunications and energy sectors including oil and gas prospecting.

European tourism operators are also excluded from operating out of the two regions.

It means that European cruise ships can dock there only in case of emergency while EU citizens and companies cannot invest or buy property in Crimea or Sevastopol.

The measures geographically limited to Crimea and Sevastopol run parallel to economic sanctions targeting Russia over the country’s role in the Ukrainian conflict.

The sanctions against Russia have last been extended until July 31. (dpa/NAN)
