Flooding

Ado Ekiti, April 24, 2019 (NAN) The Ekiti State Government has warned residents against clogging drains and water channels with refuse to guard against flooding.
The state’s Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Mr. Gbenga Agbeyo, gave the warning in Ado Ekiti at an interactive session with journalists.
Agbeyo, who expressed the state government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property of residents, said that the dumping of refuse in drains and water channels in the past had caused serious havoc in many parts of the state.
According to him, government on its own part, has begun taking proactive measures to ensure that waste dumps are cleared regularly.
He, therefore, urged them not to make the situation worse.
The commissioner said that the present administration would leave not rest on its oars in a bid to ensure that Ekiti people lived in safe, clean and hygienic environment.
He said that residents had their own parts to play in ensuring clean environment by properly disposing waste materials, regular clearing of waste dumps, as well as keeping drains and water channels free of materials capable of obstructing the free flow of water.
While expressing concern over the indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the streets in parts of the state, Agbeyo urged residents to always make good use of the communal waste bins provided by the government. (NAN)
