Ibadan, June 6, 2017 (NAN) Maureen Reece, a former Lady Captain of Ikoyi Golf Club, on Tuesday called for the involvement of more young females in golf to enhance the sport’s development in Nigeria.
Reece made the call on the sidelines of the celebration of 2017 World Women Golf Day at the Ibadan Golf Club.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the celebration was “Celebrating Girls/Women Playing Golf, Learning the Skills of a Life Time’’.
“I am calling for the involvement of more of our young Nigerian females in the game of golf.
“I want to let them know that it is a competitive sport and it is this awareness that we are creating today among the young ones who are here to mark the day,” Reece said.
She said the game should be introduced to the schools, so that students could learn it from the basics, pointing out that it is a game of skills and endurance.
“The forthcoming National Sports Federation elections could enhance the development of the sport.
“This game needs better administration and those aspiring to lead should endeavour to give their best to lift it to a greater height when they assume position.
“I am calling on the corporate bodies to also lend a helping hand in developing golf so that the game and the youths involved in it could realise its full potentials,” Reece said.
She however noted that fund has been the bane of the game, recalling how she had been struggling to get sponsorship for a female golfer, Georgia Obah.
Speaking also, Mrs Olanrewaju Otiti, a politician and golf enthusiast, said it was good that the world has now recognised women golfers with the celebration of the day.
“Before now, 70 per cent of Golf Clubs belong to men, but now with the development it means women golfers are now being recognised,” she said.
NAN reports that the event was attended by 60 female golfers, while 40 children participated in the celebration.(NAN)
