Abuja, Dec. 18, 2019 (NAN) The Commander, Guards Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Muhammed Usman, has pledged to ensure a cordial relationship with the media in order to educate the public on its activities.
Usman made the pledge during an interaction with Defence Correspondents on Wednesday in Abuja.
He said that the brigade, being a special one in charge of the seat of power, recognised that the media was key to its activities.
The commander disclosed that his experience as military assistant and chief of staff to some previous commanders opened his eyes to the need to have cordial relationship with the media.
He added that the brigade had recorded milestone in the area of civil military relation as well as the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities like their performance recently in Edinburgh, Scotland.
According to him, the brigade is determined to ensure adequate security in the FCT and other areas of responsibility as well as enhance civil military cooperation.
“The country cannot do without the media as it cannot also do without the military.
“I therefore pledged to continue to ensure cordial relationship with the members of the press and we count on your support in all our activities,” he said.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Guard Brigade, apart from its primary responsibility of guarding the seat of power, has been involved in internal security operations around Abuja.
The brigade is currently carrying out operations in parts of Nasarawa and Niger states as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) through Exercise Ayem Akpatuma 2 launched on Nov. 1.
Ayem Akpatuma is one of the exercises launched by Army Headquarters to carry out training of officers and soldiers as well as engage in operations against insecurity across the country ahead of the Yuletide.
As part of the activities of the exercise Ayem Apkatuma2, Guards Brigade has carried out a number of civil military activities such as free medical outreaches, environmental sanitation, educational support and sports within its area of responsibility. (NAN)
