Medical practitioner says sleep promotes good health

Ilorin, Jan. 11, 2017 (NAN) Dr Festus Olumide of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) has recommended adequate sleep as a panacea for good for health and vitality for memory.

Olumide told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin on Wednesday that healthy sleep was a key part of a healthy lifestyle.

According to him, sleep is important for various aspects of the human brain to function properly as adequate sleep would enhance concentration, productivity and performance.

“Our body is not a machine, it is important to get a good night sleep after daily stress and activities in order to put our body back in a good shape and condition.

“People are ignorant of the need to sleep especially students who read overnight without proper rest. Deprivation of sleep is too dangerous to health,” Olumide said.

He called on students to create time for sleep after a healthy research exercise, saying it is important to get a good night sleep after learning something new in order to process and retain the information that had been learnt.

Olumide said that adequate sleep maximised atheletic performance as longer sleep could improve speed, accuracy, reaction time and mental wellbeing.

He said mental health issues such as depression were mostly as a result of poor sleep quality and sleeping disorders.

“Getting a good sleep at night is key to a healthy lifestyle,” Olumide said. (NAN)
