Moscow, Oct. 11, 2019 (Xinhua/NAN) Moscow on Friday said people can now pass fare gates at 150 metro stations by swiping a China UnionPay card with the QuickPass signage or a phone connected to such a card capable of contactless payment.
This is the first time that contactless payment using China UnionPay cards had been applied to foreign subways.
However, the service provided by UnionPay International, Russia’s VTB bank and the Moscow Metro would be expanded to all subway stations at the end of 2019 or at the beginning of 2020.
Chinese tourists made nearly two million trips to Russia in 2018, and so far, 16 Russian financial institutions had issued more than 2.5 million UnionPay cards.
According to the Minister of the Economic and Commercial office of the Chinese Embassy in Russia, Li Jingyuan, the service will make metro trips easier for both the Chinese tourists and local residents.
The chairman, board of China UnionPay, Shao Fujun, said the company aimed to expand QuickPass payment to ground public transport and suburban trains in Moscow.(Xinhua/NAN)
