Abuja, May 13, 2017 (NAN) Moses Peter of Akwa Ibom on Saturday led the scores table after eight games at the on-going Asaph Zadok National Scrabble Championship in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 3-day 2017 championship began on Friday with 80 players from 13 states, including Abuja, participating at the National Stadium.
Peter had so far lost only one game and won seven.
He promised to put in his best to clinch the 2017 National championship award.
NAN reports that Peter led the scores table while Wellington Jighere, the world scrabble champion and Olatunde Oduwole, the national champion trailed behind.
Former president of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation, Suleiman Gora told NAN that six players were representing each state.
“Every state in the country is represented by six players and they are competing for two glories.
“The glory of an individual sport of who will become the national champion and the glory of seeing which state will emerge the first,” he said.
Gora also explained that the annual event was renamed Asaph Zadok Championship in honour of the federation’s first patron who died three years ago.
He said that all players would play 28 games in the championship.
Gora listed the participating states in the tournament as Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Adamawa and Abuja.
Others are Benue, Plateau, Anambra, Kaduna, Kano, Lagos and Oyo. (NAN)
