Abuja, May 19, 2019 (NAN) Muslims in the country have been urged to embrace modernity for the progress of the society.

National Commissioner at the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) Alhaji Mustapha Lecky, gave the advice while speaking during a Ramadan Lecture in Abuja on Sunday.

The Annual Ramadan Lecture titled: “Islam: The Solution to Problems of Humanity’’, was organised by Afemai Islamic Movement (AIM).

Lecky explained that some specific chapters and verses in the Holy Quran clearly stressed the importance of seeking for knowledge for the development of the society and good governance.

He said the tradition and teaching of Prophet Mohammad and his exemplary leadership is also a lesson for Muslims in terms of significance of acquiring knowledge.

The INEC commissioner, however, advised parents to expose their young children to Islamic knowledge and western education at their early stage.

“Like the Guest Speaker said, ‘Iqra’ the first revelation is a very encompassing word, not only means Read, but also to understand, study, learn and apply.

“You can understand that Quran and Islam are supportive, understand and application of knowledge going forward.

“For you to develop a community or to have good governance, you need to acquire knowledge,”Lecky said. (NAN)
