Lagos, July 25, 2018 (NAN) Abiodun Morounfolu, National Secretary, Nigeria Association for Physical Health Education Recreation, Sports and Dance (NAPHER-SD), has commended the National Olympic Committee (NOC) for the just-concluded NOC/IOC seminar to enhance administrators’ skills in managing sports.
Morounfolu in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday said that the much needed seminar would have a great impact on the development of sports administration in the country.
NAN reports that the three-day seminar, organised by NOC in collaboration with NAPHER-SD, which was conducted at the NOC Conference Hall, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, had in attendance astute sports administration who gave lectures on modern day sports administration.
The 38 delegate’s, made up of sports administrators from across the country, were drawn from various universities, colleges of education and other stakeholders.
Some of the lectures delivered include “The Olympic Values”, “Importance of Sports to Individuals”, “Managing People” and “Assessing Staff and Volunteer Training Needs”.
On the gains of the seminar, Morounfolu said that the seminar came at the right time when there had been a call for paradigm shift in the sports administration from traditional to modern methods.
“Aggregating the traditional administration to the modern, then we will see that there is a wide gap between how we handled things then and how we are expected to manage them now.
“There are lots of improvements now, especially when it comes to managing the athletes for better efficiency and effectiveness. We are in the era in which motivation matters.
“We also see how we can effectively coordinate the athletes and how we can monitor them, which are the mandates of sports administrators which also falls into our schedules.
“Aside from the knowledge that we have had previously, we now recognise the importance of accurate record keeping for our athletes, their progress and recovery whenever they are injured, he said.
Morounfolu said that sports development would thrive well in the face of adequate information and robust deliberation which had been provided by the NOC.
“The initiative by NOC is quite commendable and it has provided room for information dissemination, robust deliberation on knotty issues regarding the sports administration.
“The body, (NOC) meant well for us and also, they want sports to grow in the nation that is the reason they organise the programme for us as partners in progress in sports administration.
“The NAPHER-SD in Nigeria actually depends largely on the capacity building of sports administrators, so we will stop at nothing in ensuring that we have the best of mangers in the country.
“The gains of the programme are enormous which should impact positively on the way we do things and our attitude toward the development of sports now that every household is involved in sports,’’ he said. (NAN)
