Oyo govt. ejects illegal occupants from Ajoda Estate

Ibadan, Aug. 2, 2018 (NAN) The Oyo State Housing Corporation on Thursday, ejected illegal occupants from one of its estates, Ajoda Estate, situated at Egbeda Local Government Area of the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the task force of the corporation had embarked on the exercise as a result of several complaints received from occupants of the estate.
NAN reports that some of those ejected have been occupying the quarters illegally for years ranging from five to eight years.
Some of the illegal occupants were alleged to not only occupy the buildings illegally, but also sub-letting vacant ones to unsuspected members of the public.
It was a sad moment for the children of the ejected occupants, who were at home for the holidays, as they all wore unpleasant look.
Mr Samuel Adekunle, the Acting Director of the corporation, who led the team, said the exercise was carried out based on the complaint received from occupants.
“We have given most of the houses to our allottees but most of them are not resident in Ibadan.
“We have visited the estate several times but could not eject the illegal occupants, believing the owners put them there.
“It was recently that the owners came to complain of people occupying their flats illegally. We came here to tell them to vacate, but many of them refused to do so,’’ he said.
Adekunle said that the exercise was a continuous one, warning those still occupying the buildings illegally to vacate or be prosecuted.
The acting director, who also visited a new site with the team, said government had cleared 40 hectares of land in the estate to be allocated to prospective owners.
He said that the 40-hectare land, which has up to 400 plots was another scheme created by the state government to allay the fears of prospective owners.
“Most residents believe government does have land and they are afraid of buying land from land owners.
“What we normally do is to allocate land for them in the bushy areas but most of them are discouraged to develop the plots.
“We are here to clear the large expanse of land for site and services. Our surveyors will also work on it before the allocation to prospective land owners,’’ he said. (NAN)
