Gashua (Yobe), July 17, 2018 (NAN) The Presidential Committee on North-East Initiative (PCNI) on Tuesday inaugurated an Information Communication Technology (ICT) Resource Centre at the Federal University Gashua, Yobe, to promote enterprenual skills among youths.
Alhaji Tujjani Tumsah, PCNI’s Vice-Chairman, while inaugurating the centre, expressed regrets that the North-East sub-region ranked lowest in ICT knowledge in the country.
He stated that “this training was established to facilitate in bridging the gap.”
He explained that the ICT centre was designed to train youths on digital graphics and smart phone repairs to enhance self reliance and economic prosperity of youths.
“We are launching this training programme to make the people of the North-East self productive and economically independent.
“It is our believe that the programme will lead to establishment of a safe, secure and prosperous North-East region that is a major asset to Nigeria and a global model for post-conflict socio-economic recovery and development.
“With the right skills, people are better equipped to set up their own business and in turn create jobs and make them active partakers in the economy of the 21st century, which is driven by digital technology.’’
According to the vice-chairman, similar centres will soon be established in every state in the region to provide the people with ICT skills.
“We are making arrangements to establish two centres in each of the states in the region to absorb more participants,” Tumsah said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that about 20,000 youths applied for the training programme in Gashua, but only 400 were admitted.
Prof. Andrew Haruna, Vice-Chancellor, Federal University, Gashua, commended PCNI for choosing the university as a centre for the programme.
He, however, pleaded for more support in logistics and security equipment to ensure the success of the endeavour. (NAN)
