Donation
Maiduguri, May 24, 2017 (NAN) The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) has donated building materials worth millions of Naira to Borno Government.
The donation was to rebuild homes destroyed in communities liberated from Boko Haram insurgents.
The NCFRMI Federal Commissioner, Hajiya Sadiya Umar-Farouq, presented the materials to Gov. Kashim Shettima at a ceremony in Maiduguri on Wednesday.
Umar-Farouq explained that the gesture was part of the commission’s mandate to
provide succour to ravaged communities.
She said “the presentation of building materials to Borno Government is for the benefit of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and conflict ravaged communities.
“The commission has the responsibility of ensuring that durable solutions are found and communities displaced by conflicts are assisted so that they can start life afresh.”
She added that the donation was in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s recovery plan for the North East.
She noted that the commission remained fully committed to keying into the recovery plan for the North East as envisaged by President Buhari.
The NCFRMI boss, however, said that the donation did not reflect the totality of the commission’s intervention to the state or North East, rather, it was a demonstration of the commission’s dedication to support the reconstruction and recovery efforts of the state government.
“The provision of these materials does not reflect the totality of our intervention, rather, it is a demonstration of our dedication to support reconstruction and recovery efforts of Borno Government,” she said.
Umar-Farouq said that the commission also embarked on massive empowerment project for the IDPs, explaining that “we embarked on massive empowerment pilot project as part of our 2016 durable solution programme for the IDPs in the North East.
“We selected the most vulnerable persons in the communities to participate in these interventions, including IDPs from camps, those living in host communities and members of the host community itself.”
Gov. Kashim Shettima of Borno, who received the materials, thanked the commission for the donation and promised judicious use.
Items donated included bundles of roofing sheets, wheel barrows, cartons of nails, cement, planks, shovels, head pan, among others. (NAN)
