Abuja, May 24, 2019 (NAN) The Directorate of Road Transport Services (DRTS) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has cautioned road users in the territory on the need to drive safely during the rainy season.

Public Relations Officer of the directorate, Mr Kalu Emetu, gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday, in Abuja.

According to him, the root cause of most accidents were more of human errors than bad roads.

Emetu said that most people were of the habit of driving hurriedly during downpours, forgetting that the change in weather “frowns’’ at speed-driving.

“When the road is wet, there is a higher risk of road accidents because the road becomes slippery for vehicle tyres,” he said.

He advised motorists to ensure that they had “good extra tyres’’ and actively working windscreen wiper blade set.

Emetu said that commercial drivers were of the habit of not changing their windscreen wiper blade when worn out “and by so doing were endangering their lives and that of passengers, if on board’’.

“Drivers are to be watchful when purchasing wipers because there will be circulation of fake ones as we experience more rainfall,” he advised.

He advised drivers to park their vehicles carefully at the roadside in situations of foggy weather and rainfall while driving at night.

Emetu said in such situations, drivers should ensure to put on their car light indicators to alert vehicles from afar.

“Every driver must consider the people who are using the road with him or her, knowing that everyone’s life is important.

“To reduce accidents, vehicle users need to know how to operate their vehicles because if you don’t exceed the speed limit, the vehicle speed will not automatically increase itself,” he said. (NAN)
