Court orders debtor to pay businessman N169, 500 for palm oil purchased

Abuja, March 10, 2020 (NAN) A Grade I Area Court, Kubwa, on Tuesday ordered one Mrs Rachel Oladimeji to pay N169,500 to a businessman Mr Egbemba Vitalis as the cost of cans of palm oil she collected and failed to pay.

The Presiding Judge, Mr Muhammad Adamu, gave the order after several attempts to compelling Oladimeji to enter her defence failed.

Vitalis filed a civil case against Oladimeji in September, 2019, praying the court to help him recover the sum of N169, 500 being the balance of cans of palm oil purchased by Rachael.

He said that Oladimeji collected 31 cans of palm oil for N418,500 and paid him N249,000 and refused to pay the balance of N169,500 since October, 2018.

Adamu held that the court proceeded with the case and foreclosed the defendant’s right for cross-examination and passed judgment without her because she refused to appear.

Adamu said he relied on Order 9, Rule 3 of the Area Court Civil Procedure Rules before given his judgment.

The judge said an aggrieved party had the right to appeal the judgment in an FCT High Court within 30 days. (NAN)

Lassa fever:  Delta govt. directs screening of health workers

Asaba, Feb. 13, 2020 (NAN)The Delta government has directed health workers in the state who had come in contact with suspected Lassa fever cases to as a matter of urgency undergo proper screening to contain the spread of the disease.

 

Dr Mordi Ononye, the Commissioner of Health gave the directive during a meeting of the state’s Emergency Operations Committee on Lassa fever on Thursday in Asaba.

 

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the health commissioner had on Feb. 2, during a pidgin English public enlightenment programme “How Una See Am” revealed that the state had recorded eight cases with one death while  120 persons were placed under surveillance for the ailment.

 

Ononye said the state government would not allow the health of residents to be compromised because of the unprofessional attitude of some health workers to adhere to procedures.

 

He  called on owners of health facilities and their workers handling Lassa fever cases to report to the Disease Surveillance and Notification Offices (DSNOs) in their domain and submit themselves for proper screening.

 

The commissioner  said that any medical facility that had treated a confirmed Lassa fever case would be shut down for 48 hours and the premises decontaminated before such a facility would be reopened.

 

According to the commissioner, failure to do this will put such facility at a risk of spreading the disease.

 

He decried the situation where action(s) of a health worker would impede the efforts of the committee to contain the spread of the disease by refusing to adhere to instructions.

 

He lauded the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) for sending a Rapid Response Team, led by Dr Belu Abaye, to Delta to render technical assistance. (NAN)

Man, 30, docked for alleged theft of bus worth N850,000

Lagos, Feb. 12, 2020 (NAN) A 30-year-old man, Sunday Eze, was on Wednesday brought before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing  a Suzuki mini bus valued at N850,000.

The defendant is standing trial  on two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

Eze, however, pleaded not guilty to the offences.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Kehinde Omisakin, told the court that the defendant allegedly committed the offence on Feb. 10, about 10:00a.m., at No. 17, Sanusi Street in Sari-Iganmu, Lagos.

She alleged that Eze had stolen the mini bus with registration number KGE 101 YC from the complainant, Mr Paul Onwuka.

Omisakin said that the offence contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Section 287 prescribes a three year jail term for offenders while Section 411 stipulates a two-year term for offenders.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Komolafe granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties each in like sum.

She adjourned the case until March 24 for hearing. (NAN)
