Minna, Feb.17, 2020 ( NAN) Police in Niger have arrested six suspects for allegedly setting ablaze the official vehicle of the Director-General of the state’s Bureau for Religious Affairs, Umar Faruk Abdullahi.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Alhaji Adamu Usman, disclosed this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Monday.
Usman said on Sunday at about 12: 30 hours, Faruk received information that a group of worshipers in their hundreds had converged at a stream behind Talba Housing Estate along Bida road supplicating before an indented rock outcrops which they believed had footprints of Prophet Mohammed (SAW).
“The people in their hundreds were drinking and bathing in the polluted stream for medicinal and spiritual fulfillment.
” Consequent upon which the Director-General, Bureau for Religious Affairs, and four of his staff went to the stream to verify and admonished the crowd against heresy.
” The motley crowds in their hundreds resorted to violence and started stoning the director-general and his men and set his official car ablaze,” he said.
He said the director-general and two of his staff sustained various degrees of injury during the incident.
The  commissioner said that a reinforcement of Police patrol teams was mobilised to the scene and it rescued the director-general and his staff, and later took them to Kiro Hospital, Minna, for treatment.
” We have arrested six suspects in connection with the lawless act and the location has been sealed by the police, ” he said.( NAN)

Minna, Feb.14, 2020 ( NAN) The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Niger says 6 people have died in an accident on Thursday on the outskirts of Lambata -Lapai road of Gurara Local Government Area of the state.

The FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Mr Joel Dagwa, told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Minna that the accident involved a Daf trailer  with registration No.  WTD 77 XD 555 XX heading to Kano from Lagos State.

Dagwa said that the Truck that came from Lagos was already loaded with goods before adding the passengers.

” The accident involved 57 people, 54 males, 2 male children and 1 female child; 6 of them were killed while 35 sustained injuries and taken to Federal Medical Centre, Gawu- Babangida.

” All the 6  corpses have been deposited at Sabon Wuse general  hospital’s morgue,” he said.

He blamed the accident on overloading and loss of control of the vehicle.

The sector commander said that the Corps would continue to monitor road users to guard against overloading and dangerous driving.

” We will sustain our ongoing  aggressive patrols across all major highways to ensure that road users adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations to avoid road accidents,” he said.( NAN)

Cleric condemns killings, urges more provision of more equipment to armed forces

Minna, Feb. 13,2020 ( NAN) The Chief Imam of the Federal University of Technology, Minna Central Mosque, Dr Bashir Yankuzo, has condemned the incidences of kidnapping, banditry and cattle rustling in some parts of the country.
Yankuzu made the condemnation in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Thursday.
He described as senseless, the killings being perpetrated by the criminals in parts of the country.
He, therefore, urged the Federal Government to provide more equipment to the Armed Forces to enable them to tackle the security challenges facing the country more effectively.
The Cleric, however, commended the federal government for introducing community policing, saying, the initiative would help to address the lingering security challenges in the country.
He called on Nigerians to support the federal government in the ongoing fight against banditry and kidnapping by giving information on miscreants to the nearest security agencies for prompt action.( NAN)

Niger resuscitates motorcycle movement restriction

Minna, Feb. 13, 2020 (NAN) The Niger state Government Thursday announced that it is resuscitating the law restricting movement of motorcycles from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. in Minna and environs.

A statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Ahmed Matane, also warned commercial motorcyclists, in Minna and environs to desist from carrying more than one passenger at a time.

Matani further called on the operators of tricycles to desist from overloading of their tricycles.

He explained that the resuscitation would commence on Feb. 15, adding that the action was necessitated by the violent attacks, abductions and killings in some part of the state.

“All motorcycles and tricycles operators must ensure that they obtained plate number from Board of Internal Revenue, this is in line with the amended Niger State Road Transport Traffic Law 2015.

“Niger state had long been reputed as the most peaceful state in the country. Today, that status has been put to a tricky test by armed bandits.

“All hands must be on deck to secure the state from the unnecessary security challenges that it has witnessed for sometimes now,” Matane said.

He said that the present security challenges are troubling for the government and residents, particularly those directly affected by the activities of the criminals.

“Governor Abubakar Bello led administration is leaving no stones unturned in its bid to restore peace, orderliness, sanity and calm,” he said.

Matane stated that government regretted any inconveniences the resuscitation of the restriction order might cause the commuters.

He called on motorcycles and tricycles operators in Minna and environs to adhere strictly to the order as security agencies have been directed to enforce the restriction. (NAN)
