Police Games: Force Headquarters lead the way as athletics events take centre stage

Oba (Anambra), March 6, 2020 (NAN) The track and field events of the 12th Nigerian Police Games (NPG) on Friday saw a good number of medals being shared by athletes from the participating zones.

But athletes from Force Headquarters took the centre stage with several triumphs.

Queensley Asedo of Zone 5 won gold in the 10km Walk Race for women in 55 mins 46 secs.

Seyi Shofeson from Zone 2 winning silver with 68.09 and Josephine Clement of Zone 3 the bronze.

In the male 10km, Lawrence Oluwaseyi from Force Headquarters returned after 50.55 to win gold, while Kazeem Adeyemi representing Lagos finished after 53.24 for silver.

Alade Felix of Force Headquarters ended the race in 53.27 to win the bronze medal.

Force Headquarters won the gold medal in 5000m women through Helen Mamman in 20.32 mins, while Mary Joseph of Zone 3 won the silver after finishing in 22.58.

Dorcas Ambo, also of Force Headquarters, won the bronze medal in 23.26.

Women’s shot put was also won by Zone 2’s Uju Anonefo after throwing over 13.65m, while Patricia Uzugebu of Zone 7 won silver with 11.86 metres.

Nkiruka Onuejizu from Zone 6 won the gold in 100m women with 12.25, while Thomas Goodness and Okonkwo, both from Force Headquarters, won silver and bronze with 12.71 and 12.76 respectively.

In the men’s 100m, Akintola Alaba from Force Headquarters clinched the gold.

The silver and bronze medals were won by Zone 11 after Areola Efunsile and Akomolafe finished in 10.98 and 11.06 respectively.

Force Headquarters, Zone 2 and Zone 11 won the gold, silver and bronze medals in the 4 x 100m mixed relay with 46.6, 47.09 and 52.34 respectively.

Linda Friday won the 200m gold for Zone 7 in 24.70, while Nkiruka Onuejizu secured silver for Zone 6 with 24.71 and Goodness Thomas of Force Headquarters the bronze with 25.65.

Anambra to build on gains of Police Games, Gov. Obiano says

Awka, March 5, 2020 (NAN) Anambra government on Thursday in Awka assured that it would take advantage of the gains of the ongoing Nigerian Police Games to deepen sports development in the state.

The state governor, Willie Obiano, told newsmen the new sports infrastructure built for the Games would be made available for the use of athletes and sports enthusiasts.

“I am happy with the progress of the competition so far, and the state has benefited immensely from it in terms of economy and social life.’’

He disclosed that the state would storm the 20th National Sports Festival (NSF) in Benin with a contingent of 250 athletes who would compete in all the events.(NAN)

LOC chairman lauds athletes’ performance at 12th Police Games

Awka, March 3, 2020 (NAN) John Abang, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) Chairman for the 12th Nigerian Police Games tagged “Anamba 2020”, on Tuesday in Awka lauded the performance of athletes at the ongoing games.

Abang, who is the Commissioner of Police in Anambra, made the commendation while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said the competition had progressed as programmed in terms of facilities and logistics.

“So far, the Games has been wonderful. The events are going on at the various venues as scheduled and there are no hitches.

“Our athletes have been well behaved. They have shown a good spirit of sportsmanship and positive competition.

“It is expected that, after this Games, Nigeria will have a new breed of champions from the Police because the Police have been a factory for world champions in all sports,” Abang said.

The LOC chairman lauded the Anambra government for putting up a high level of organisation within a short time.

“The spill-over effect will remain for a long time for the people of the state to reap rewards from.’’

NAN reports that at the ongoing Games, competition has ended in events such as scrabble and taekwondo.

The 10-day competition for the men and women of the Nigeria Police Force had started on Saturday.(NAN)

Awka, March 3, 2020 (NAN) Zone 2’s female volleyball team on Tuesday in Awka defeated their opponents from Zone 4 (Makurdi) 2-0 in the first match of the event at the ongoing Nigerian Police Games (NPG).

Earlier in the event, Zone 2 (Lagos) had a walk-over win against Zone 9 (Umuahia) in the games held at the Alex Ekwueme Square.

Force Headquarters had a walk-over win against Zone 9 in male basketball, while Force Headquarters also had 53-16 win over Zone 5 (Benin).

Competition has also began in male handball with Zone 11 (Osogbo) thrashing Zone 8 (Lokoja) 29-4.

In female handball, Zone 7 were 14-4 better than their contemporaries from Zone 3.(NAN)

Police Games: Force Headquarters win male singles gold in scrabble, shine in hockey

Awka, March 1, 2020 (NAN) Patrick Omini of Force Headquarters (FHQ) Abuja won the second gold medal available in the scrabble event at the 12th Nigerian Police Games (NPG) on Sunday in Awka.

Omini claimed the gold medal in the male category of the singles event after eight wins and 935 accumulated points.

Joy Egbe of Zone 5 had earlier picked the sport’s first gold medal after winning in the female category with seven wins and 1,378 accumulated points.

Ubi Oju representing Zone 6 won silver in the male category with seven wins and 1,087 accumulated points.

Adegoke Adesanya from Zone 2 won the bronze medal with seven wins and 850 accumulated points.

In other events, the round-robin series stage of the hockey competition began with a total of four matches.

In the male category, FHQ defeated their counterparts from Zone 2 and Zone 1 with 1-0 scorelines while Zone 3 secured a 0-0 draw with their opponents from Zone 7.

In the only game played in the female category, Zone 7 defeated their rivals from Zone 1 1-0.

Kalat Shammang, Chairman of the Police Hockey Federation, said the competition was in a league format where the top three would win the gold, silver and bronze medals.

Shammang, who is a member of the Technical Committee, commended the quality of play and the positive rivalry among the teams.

Egbe retains female scrabble gold at Nigerian Police Games

Agulu (Anambra), March 1, 2020 (NAN) Joy Egbe of Zone 5 on Sunday emerged champion in the female category of the scrabble event at the ongoing Nigerian Police Games.

Egbe won the gold medal after seven wins and a cumulative 1,378 points in the event which took place at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Agulu.

She was the reigning champion in the game having won gold in the 11th edition of the Games held in Abuja in 2016.

Christiana David who represented Zone 6 won the silver medal with five wins and 883 cumulative points.

Francisca Ubong who is also of Zone 6 was the bronze winner from five wins and 572 cumulative points.

Ubong was the High Game winner with 563 points.

Reacting to her victory, Egbe said she was happy to be among the first gold medalists at the 2020 Games which started on Saturday.

She lauded the level of competition, saying it brought out the best in her.

“There are good rivals, but I have come prepared. I am more exposed now, as I also represent my state, Edo.

“However, I am grateful to God and to my superiors for the opportunity to be here. It feels good being a champion,” Egbe said.

Also speaking, Johnson Ibanga, the National Scrabble Coach for the Nigerian Police, said the competition was a huge improvement over previous editions.

“It means a lot of improvement, as more people are coming and the standard is getting higher.

“She (Egbe) has improved on herself. The cumulative points today is like an all-time high score for the competition,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that other categories in the scrabble competition include the male singles, male and female doubles and mixed doubles events.(NAN)

13 contingents already in Anambra for 12th Police Games, FPRO says

Awka, Feb. 28, 2020 (NAN) Teams from the Force Headquarters and the 12 Zonal Commands of the Nigeria Police Force have arrived in Anambra for the 12th Nigerian Police Games due to begin on Saturday.

Frank Mba, the Force Public Relations Officer, disclosed this on Friday at the Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, venue of the opening ceremony.

Mba, a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), told newsmen that the teams’ athletes were battle ready, and the Games promised to be successful and memorable.

He said all the Games officials, as well as scouts lined up to spot budding and exceptional talents during the Games, had also arrived.

“We have about 3,000 athletes already, all from the 12 zones and the Force Headquarters which is competing as a zone. They are all represented in the ongoing parade rehearsal.

“We also have all the officials and technical people, including non-police officials.

“These non-police officials are the professionals from the various national sports federations as well as those for the talent hunt, led by a great sports ambassador, Mary Onyali, who is a daughter of Anambra.

“So, as it is now, we are satisfied with the level of readiness of the facilities for the various events in spite of the fact that some of them are undergoing finishing touches,” Mba said.

He said the Police were hopeful that the facilities would be ready for their events, and assured that there were ready alternatives if the ones still under construction were not ready.

“We are good to go. Overall, 90 per cent of the facilities are ready.

“Even at the biggest stage of world’s sports, be it Olympics, football World Cup or cricket World Cup, provided it is a massive sports event, you keep putting finishing touches even when the competition is ongoing.’’

The DCP acknowledged that there were some events whose facilities were still being prepared, assuring that they would soon be ready.

“We are very hopeful that all of them will be put to use by Monday. The good thing is that all the events are not starting on the same day.

“We also have Option B for some of the facilities that are being tidied up in case they don’t meet up.

But, overall, we are happy with the Anambra people and government. The atmosphere is fantastic, reception massive, hospitality overwhelming and the warmness of the people very motivating,” he said.(NAN)

Abuja, Feb. 26, 2020 (NAN) The Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, on Wednesday said he was full of hopes that the 12th Nigerian Police Games would throw up new talents for the country.

Dare, while receiving Alkali Mohammed, the Chairman, Police Games Planning Committee and Force Secretary who visited him in Abuja, noted that the Police Games had produced great talents for Nigeria.

“The Games have produced talents such as Sunny Isekwena, Julius Aghahowa, Chioma Ajunwa, Samuel Peters, among others.

“We are now hopeful that this event will throw up new talents that can represent the country at the Olympics and make us proud.’’

The minister expressed happiness that the Games was holding before the National Sports Festival (NSF) in Benin and would afford the ministry the opportunity of getting more athletes and facilities developed.

“So, scouts will be sent there to fish out talents. The games will also be an opportunity to develop sports facilities,’’ he said.

Mohammed, while speaking earlier, said a record number of 3,000 police men and women would take part in the Games slated for Awka in Anambra from Saturday to March 7.

The Games Planning Committee Chairman, who is an Assistant Inspector-General (AIG), said everything was set for a hitch-free competition.

“Athletes and teams from twelve zones of the Nigerian Police Force will be competing in the 10-day competition.

“It will have events like track and field, football, squash, table tennis, boxing, wrestling, shooting, lawn tennis, basketball, among others.

“And that is why we are here to assure the Minister that everything is set for the Nigerian Police Games in Anambra,’’ he said.

Mohammed disclosed that the Games organisers had so far enjoyed the tremendous support of the Anambra governor, Willy Obiano, and all was set for a great event.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Games’ opening ceremony will hold at the Dr Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka on Saturday.

The closing ceremony will hold on March 7 at the renovated Rojenny Sports Complex in Oba, near Onitsha.(NAN)
