Police Games: Gov. Obiano donates 5,000 bags of rice, others to athletes, officials

Awka, Anambra, March 7, 2020 (NAN) Gov. Mr Willie Obiano of Anambra on Saturday donated 5,000 bags of rice to the athletes and officials that participated in the 2020 Nigeria Police Games in Awka.

Obiano made the donation at the Dr Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, during the closing ceremony of the games.

He explained that the donation was to show hospitality to the athletes and officials following a successful conclusion of the games in the state.

“Anambra is one of the states where rice is produced and I want to thank Coscharis farms for supporting the athletes with 2000 bags of rice.

“I also want to thank Anambra rice mill in Amichi for supporting with 3000 bags of rice for the athletes. We also have over 200 Anambra manufacturers who donated their products to the athletes.

“So, every athlete and policeman that came to Anambra, over 5000 of you will have a bag of rice each and another bag containing various made in Anambra produce,” Obiano said.

According to Obiano, the facilities used for the police games will be maintained and used to nurture athletes to stardom in the state.

He said: “The facilities will be used to develop talents in sports who will bring honour to us; the facilities will be put to active use to build the sporting talents in the state.

“This games has reinforced our self belief and enriched our lives in Anambra and we shall live with the memories left behind within these seven days.

“We have reclaimed our pride of place among Nigerians and we have opened our arms wide to the world. We are now ready to take big challenges.”

He commended Anambra born transport operators like “Chisco” and “GUO” who contributed their quota to the success of the games by using their buses to convey athletes and officials to different centres of event.

NAN reports that the games which started on Feb. 27 ended on March 7 with Nigerian singers Flavour and Harrysong thrilling participants and spectators.

Force Headquarters emerged as overall champions of the game with 274 medals to dethrone last edition winners Zone 2 with 230 medals. (NAN)

Police Games: Force Headquarters emerge winners, dethrone Zone 2

Awka, March 7, 2020 (NAN) Force Headquarters (FHQ) Abuja on Saturday dethroned Zone 2 to emerged as the overall winner of the Nigeria Police Games tagged “Anambra 2020”.

FHQ garnered a total of 274 medals comprising of 118 gold, 80 silver and 74 bronze to top the overall medals table to relegate defending champions Zone 2 to 2nd place with 230 medals.

The medals table showed that Zone 2 (Lagos and Ogun) had gold, 83 silver 85 and 62 bronze to finish the games as runners up while Zone 11 placed 3rd with total of 156 medals of 53 gold, 48 silver and 55 bronze.

Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra while declaring the games closed urged the athletes to project the state in positive light having enjoyed the hospitality and peace of residents of the state.

“When I reflect on what has happened here since we gathered here only last Saturday, I begin to realise that so much has happened in just one week.

“Again, when I reflect on what has happened, I begin to realise that we can write a new sporting chapter of history in one week and that we can also write a new book of greatness in one week.

“History and greatness is what this games has done and we have put out an amazing narrative of excellence in one week.

“Hosting the 12th edition of the biennial police games has brought out the best in us; nothing else unites a people like sports and nothing renews national unity and heals the cracks between people like sports.

“I have no doubt that many of the participants of this games may never have visited Anambra if not for “Anambra 2020”.

“I am sure that after experiencing Anambra for seven days, the athletes and officials will have a more balanced view of the state and a richer story to tell,” Obiano said.

The governor urged the participants of the games to preach the success story of the state to their respective states, families and friends.

Obiano boasted that Anambra had become a destination of choice for those seeking for peace.

He expressed joy that the games was successfully concluded without any unpleasant incident.

NAN reports that 12 Zones of the Nigeria Police Force including Force Headquarters participated in the Games with took place in over 10 centers in Anambra. (NAN)

Police Games: Gov. Obiano hails winning athletes at swimming event

Awka, March 7, 2020 (NAN) Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra has commended the swimming team of Force Headquarters (FHQ) Abuja after they emerged winners of the swimming event at ongoing 2020 Nigeria Police Games in Awka.

Obiano gave the commendation on Friday while presenting the trophy to the team at the Dr Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, venue of the swimming competition.

The governor was represented by Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).

He urged the swimmers to extend the winning mentality to continental and world championships.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that FHQ won a total of 34 medals comprising of 5 Gold, 15 Silver and 4 bronze.

Zone 2 made their supporters proud with 25 medals; 8 Gold, 6 Silver and 12 bronze, while Zone 6 secured 3 Gold, 3 Silver and 2 bronze.

It was also a memorable outing for Zone 5 swimmers as they picked 2 Gold, 9 Silver and 1 bronze, while Zone 11 got 2 Gold, 5 Silver and 9 bronze medals.

Host Zone 9, won just 1 Silver and 2 bronze medals.

The games which started on Feb. 29 would end on  March 7. (NAN)

Force Headquarters win shooting event with 14 gold

Awka, March 6, 2020 (NAN) Force Headquarters (FHQ) Abuja, on Friday continued their exploit at the ongoing 2020 Nigeria Police Games in Anambra with the team winning 14 gold, 8 silver and 5 bronze to top the shooting medals table.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that shooting event was concluded on Friday at the Police Training College, Orji River, Enugu State.

A breakdown of the gold medals won by FHQ showed that 4 medals came from individual events while 10 gold were picked from the team events.

Zone 7 also made their presence felt as they won 5 gold medals comprising of 3 individual gold and 2 gold medals from team events, while Zone 1 registered their presence after securing only one gold in individual event.

Also, Team FHQ won 6 individual silver medals and 2 team silver medals while Zone 7 closely followed with 1 individual silver medals and 6 team silver medals.

Zone 6 won an individual silver medal in the competition, while Zone 2 garnered 3 silver and 3 bronze medal.

The 12 biennial Games which started on Feb. 29 would end on March 7 with a closing ceremony at the Dr Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka. (NAN)

Coronavirus won’t deter us from Olympics preparation –AFN official

Awka (Anambra), March 5, 2020 (NAN) The Performance Director of Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Gabriel Okon said on Thursday that the rate of spread of the deadly Coronavirus would not deter the federation from preparing the country’s athletes for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Okon, also a board member of AFN representing South South Zone stated this in Awka, Anambra while giving his assessment of the ongoing 2020 Nigeria Police Games.

He said that the federation was already preparing the athletes for international competitions in the U.S. and Europe as well as the African Championship but would take necessary steps to avoid the deadly virus.

“Athletics trials will hold in June and we have series of competition lined up, so that the athletes can qualify for the Olympics.

“We have the African Championship and we have some meet in U.S. and Europe, then we have the national trials, so all hands are on deck to ensure the athletes qualify to represent Nigeria at the Olympics.

“We don’t have to worry about coronavirus; the organisers of the game are putting their heads together to know the appropriate time to postpone the Olympics if need be.

“Right now, we are just focusing on preparing and getting ready for the Olympics, that is our main concern,” Okon said.

He explained that the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports had already set machinery in motion to ensure a successful outing at the Olympics.

The AFN official said: “We have a vibrant Minister of Sports and he is very active and focused. Few weeks ago we adopted the athletes programme which saw some of them been paid to prepare for the Olympics.

“We no longer have a situation where money won’t be released for athletes to train; they now have money to train. So serious athletes and coaches are now preparing for the Olympics.”

On the ongoing Police Games, Okon said the event met every standard and was organised in accordance with world athletic rules.

He commended the police for nurturing the likes of late Sunday Bada and Chioma Ajunwa who won laurels for the country at international competitions as police officers. (NAN)

We’ll set new records at 2020 Police Games – AIG Muazu

Awka (Anambra), March 4, 2020 (NAN) The Chairman, Nigerian Police Athletics Association, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Zubairu Muazu, has stated that athletes participating at the ongoing sports fiesta in Anambra would set new records.

Muazu, who is also a member, Sports Planning Committee, 2020 Nigeria Police Games, said this on Wednesday at the Rojenny International stadium Oba, Anambra, venue of track and field events of the ongoing Police Games.

He noted that the athletes had no option than to break their own records after placing the Nigeria Police Force as record holders in some of the events at the 2019 World Police Games in China.

“We are looking forward to setting new standards especially in athletics because we have many of them that competed favourably in August 2019 when we went for the World Police Games and they came home with about 26 medals.

“We have some world records we are looking at and we hope to break them at this police games to prepare us for the next edition of the World Police Games,” he said.

Muazu admitted that there were some challenges encountered in the buildup to the Games but that the state government intervened eventually.

“I will say that so far so good after taking off in a colourful ceremony on Saturday, as at Wednesday, some of the events have been concluded and we are coasting to the finish line.

“Of course, there have been challenges right from the beginning and it is obvious you can’t organise competition of this magnitude without encountering some challenges.

“One of them is that Anambra State has lots of sporting facilities but many of them are lying waste.

“We were disappointed the first time we came to Rojenny stadium, but government intervened and upgraded the facilities.

“Government equally upgraded the facilities in other sporting centres; there are new volleyball, handball and basketball courts built for this tournament.

“The state government deserves to be commended for hosting this tournament; and moving athletes from 12 zones and Force Headquarters posed lots of logistic challenges,” he said.

The AIG further said that efforts were being intensified to prepare the athletes for the 2020 Olympics scheduled to hold in Tokyo, Japan.

He said: “We have police officers going to represent Nigeria at the Olympics and they are already preparing alongside other non-police officers. Many of them will be at this month’s National Sports Festival in Edo State,” Muazu said. (NAN)

Awka (Anambra), March 3, 2020 (NAN) Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra has charged the athletes and officials of Zone 9 to ensure they win the ongoing 2020 Nigeria Police Games in Awka, Anambra.

Obiano gave the charge when he visited the Dr Alex Ekwueme Square to cheer athletes from different Zones vying for honours at the Games.

The governor watched teams from different zones as they competed in basketball, volleyball and handball.

“I encourage all the athletes to put in their best but I want the home team (Zone 9) to lift all the available trophies,” Obiano said.

Promise Okoroji, a female volleyball athlete from Zone 9 assured the governor that her team would win the volleyball gold.

“We trained well and we were well motivated to win; our training before now was tactical and after that we selected our best six, and I hope that we will do the governor and our zone proud,” she said. (NAN)

We’ve enough personnel to fight bandits, do sports -Sokoto CP

Awka (Anambra), March 3, 2020 (NAN) The Commissioner of Police in Sokoto State, Mr Ibrahim Kaoje, has assured the people of the state that there are adequate personnel to fight crime and insecurity in the area.

Ka’Oje gave the assurance in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the ongoing Nigeria Police Games in Awka, Anambra.

He said that Sokoto had enough personnel to man security apart from those participating in the ongoing Police Games tagged “Anambra 2020”.

“Police is a regimented organisation; we have many other reserved police formation on ground to do the job of protecting the area.

“Participating in the Games will not distract us from protecting the country. What we are doing here is to enhance their professional performances,” he said.

Ka’Oje noted that the biggest takeaway of the Games would be the platform it provided to expose the sports talents in the police for national, continental and international tournaments.

Kaoje, also the chairman of Badminton Club and organising contact of the 2020 Police Games, advised the athletes to make maximum use of the opportunities provided by the Games.

“Essentially, for some of us coming from Zone 10 to participate in this game, what it means is that we are not only good in fighting crime, banditry and other security challenges, we can also fight in the field of play by showcasing our talents.

“There are lots of sport talents in the Nigerian police and it goes to confirm that we will continue with the trail we have blazed in sports.

“Yes, we have the responsibility of fighting crime and criminalities in the country but we have to definitely create time to display our sports side.

“In participating in sports, we will show that we have the stamina, the courage to participate in general duty. It is a show of professionalism.

“What will be the biggest takeaway of this tournament is the harmony and exposure it will give to our men and women. It will put them in the spirit for future national and international tournaments.

“As you know, the National Sports Festival is already at hand and I am optimistic that this tournament will put the athletes in the right frame of mind,” he said.

According to the CP, the sports fiesta has come of age and there have equally been tremendous improvement in the game in the regime of the current IGP Mohammed Adamu.

He added: “We have to really thank the Governor of Anambra state, Mr Willie Obiano for inviting us to host the game here and enable the police to showcase their talents.

“The athletes should exploit this opportunity and be encouraged to do more.

“For many of them that have not been to this part of the country, especially those from Zamfara, Sokoto or the interior part of the country, this will help them to change environment; it will also help them to relax their muscles.

“It is almost certain that participating in this tournament will guarantee promotion especially the gold medalists. It is a yardstick for promotion and winning well will be part of the assessment for special promotion. They should be part of it.” (NAN)

Zone 7 targets football gold at 2020 Police Games

Awka (Anambra), March 3, 2020 (NAN) Alhaji Abubakar Baba, Chairman Organising Committee, Zone 7 (FCT, Niger and Kaduna), 2020 Nigeria Police Games boasted on Tuesday that his Zone would clinch the football gold at the ongoing sports fiesta in Awka, Anambra.

Baba disclosed this on Tuesday in Awka after his male football team played a 1-1 draw with Zone 2 (Lagos and Ogun) in a quarterfinal encounter played at the Otuocha stadium.

He said their desire to target gold was to ensure that the players get special promotion from the police authority.

“Promotion is part of incentive and motivation for the Games and everybody is focusing on medals when it comes to the Police Games because they know promotion will follow.

“It is the qualification for gold medal that will activate the promotion by the police authority.

“Our target is to get medals in all the games because I have confidence in my boys and I know they will deliver.

“Our area of strength is football because even today we played against Zone 2 and it ended 1-1, and this is the only zone we are afraid of.

“We are on course; we have qualified for semifinals after picking five points from the group – we won our first match 2-0, second match ended 1-1, and this third match also ended 1-1,” Baba said

According to Baba, Inspector General of Police Mohammed Adamu and the Main Organising Committee for the Games deserves commendation.

He also commended the Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano for providing facilities and a conducive environment for the event.

“The MOC has done well. When you look at the various teams, they all have a uniform; there is nothing like borrowing jersey. Every zone has its own colour, from jersey to canvass,” he said.

NAN reports that Zone 7 is currently on top of Group A table of the male football event with five points from three matches after a win and two draws.

Meanwhile, preliminary matches were played in the other ball games – basketball, volleyball and handball at the Dr Alex Ekwueme Square.

In the male volleyball event, Zone 6 outclassed their Zone 3 counterparts 2-0, Force Headquarter (FHQ) overpowered Zone 1 (Kano) 2-0, the same score line Zone 4 produced against Zone 8.

In the female category, Zone 6 rattled Zone 9 by 2-0, Zone 3 lost 0-2 to Zone 7, while FHQ defeated Zone 1, 2-0.

At the basketball court, FHQ ladies thrashed Zone 5, 53-16, while Zone 5 male team won their encounter 37-19 against their Zone 7 counterparts.

Elsewhere, Zone 10 narrowly defeated Zone 7 by 12-11 in the male handball event, while Zone 7 humbled Zone 3, 14-4 in the female category.  (NAN)
