National Youth Games: Delta say they are ready for 5th title

Asaba, Sept. 6, 2019 (NAN) The Delta government said on Friday that Team Delta was prepared to win the fifth edition of the National Youth Games (NYG) which formally gets underway on Sunday in Ilorin.

Executive Chairman of the Delta Sports Commission, Tonobok Okowa, told newsmen in Asaba that the state was sending a strong contingent to Ilorin to buttress this position.

He said Delta, which had won all the previous editions of the Games, would be participating in 34 sports at the games.

“Delta state has won all the past editions of the Games and we are fully prepared to win it again.

“We are going to Ilorin with a contingent of 750 persons, made up of over 400 athletes and about 300 officials.

“Over the years, Delta State has maintained a commanding position in sports in Nigeria.

“As such, this fifth edition of the NYG is another opportunity for us to consolidate our position.

“Our athletes have been in camp for a long period, and I can tell you that they are well prepared and motivated to do us proud,” Okowa said.

The contingent is expected to depart Asaba for Ilorin on Saturday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports also that Team Delta held a prayer session on Friday at the Stephen Keshi Stadium.(NAN)

Ogbemudia Stadium reconstruction hasn’t affected Edo athletes’ training for NYG, Commission official says

Benin, Sept. 5, 2019 (NAN) Ongoing reconstruction works at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin have not stopped coaches from training athletes for the National Youth Games (NYG), an Edo Sports Commission official has said.

Godwin Dudu-Orumen, who is the commission’s Chairman, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Benin that training of athletes had been difficult since the stadium came under
reconstruction.

“We’ve been working quite hard. I have had sessions with coaches and with the commission’s Deputy Director of Technical and we let them know that not training at the stadium should not be an excuse.

“And with the kind approval of the Secretary to Edo State Government (SSG), Osarodion Ogie, we got three buses to take athletes to University of Benin Sports Complex for training.

“Facilities at the university sports complex are also modern ones which they can train with. We are looking at their timing, we are looking at their form and we monitor them daily to see what they are doing over there.

“I am sure that by the time the Games commence, we will be ready to show to the rest of our opponents at the NYG what stuff we are made of.

“So, not training at the Ogbemudia Stadium should not be a reason for failure because, all things been equal, training does not have to be at the Ogbemudia Stadium. There are other grounds for training which we made available to them,’’ he said.

The Dudu-Orumen urged all the athletes to abide by their coaches’ instructions and remain united as a team during and after the competition.

NAN reports that the NYG, which is now in its fifth edition, will hold in Ilorin from Saturday to Sept. 17.(NAN)

Unilorin to grant automatic admission to outstanding 5th NYG athletes

Ilorin, May 10, 2019 (NAN) The Vice-Chancellor of University of Ilorin, Prof. Suleiman Age, on Friday expressed the institution’s readiness to grant admission to athletes who distinguished themselves during the 5th National Youth Games (NYG).

The Vice-Chancellor made the promise while hosting Directors of Sports from 23 states of the federation as well as other sports stakeholders.

The group and some officials of the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports Development were in Ilorin for a Joint Technical Meeting of the 5th NYG scheduled for September.

“Unilorin s always open to hosting national and international sports competitions and events,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

The Director of Grassroots Sports Development Department, Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports Development, Dr Ademola Are, in a speech said the Ministry would continue to play its role in the organisation of the NYG.

The delegates had earlier undertaken an inspection visit to the various venues and accommodation facilities earmarked for the Games.

While reacting, they commended the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports Development for the sustained hosting of the Games.

They also commended the Vice-Chancellor and management team of University of Ilorin for their hospitality and the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Games’ next five editions.

The delegates, during their meeting, approved the list of sports and events for the Games and resolved to include mixed doubles events for badminton, table tennis, Ayo, darts and tennis.

They also included team event for chess and are to get clarifications on the heavyweight categories in kung-fu and taekwondo.

The delegates also approved the timelines for the NYG and resolved that online accreditation would take place in various states and the FCT.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the screening of athletes would hold on Sept. 9.

A fresh letter of invitation for participation at the NYG would be sent as a reminder to all states of the federation and the FCT after May 29.

This was due to the inauguration of new governments in some states.

NAN also reports that the screening exercise for the Games would be based on sport by sport basis and for a day only (Sept. 9) and on physical examination.

The screening would also be witnessed by representatives of the National Sports Federations, preferably the Secretaries-General and Technical Directors, in order to prevent multiple screenings.

Meanwhile, the delegates also resolved that appeals against athletes screened out shall be supported with birth certificates, national identity cards and birth certificates from the National Population Commission not later than 2017.

They agreed this should be accompanied with a non-refundable re-screening fee of N50,000.

The delegates, however, commended University of Ilorin for the improved state of the sports venues and accommodation facilities earmarked for the Games.

They also approved that the first and second-placed teams at the zonal eliminations would qualify from each zone for the finals.

The delegates also approved that for a sport to score in a particular NYG, a minimum of nine states must enter and participate.

Also, they agreed that for an event to score, a minimum of five states must enter and participate.

They approved that, due to government policy on means of identification from May 1, the National
Identity Cards and International Passports would serve as means of identification during screening for future NYGs.(NAN)
