Children’s Day: Speaker seeks collective efforts to eradicate child labour, abuses

Keffi (Nasarawa State), May 27, 2019 (NAN) The Speaker, Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, has called for collective efforts to eradicate rising cases of child labour and abuses in the country.
Abdullahi appealed for joint effort to eradicate the menace of hawking and begging among children for societal development.
This is contained in a statement issued on Monday by his Press Secretary, Alhaji Jibrin Gwamna, in Keffi in commemoration of the Children’s Day, observed annually on May 27.
The statement quoted the speaker as saying that if parents, stakeholders join hands with government in tackling child abuses in the country it will go a long way in promoting peace and societal development.
Abdullahi decried violence against children, urging parents and guardians to strive to ensure good education and proper upbringing of their children and wards for a better society.
He described education as the best instrument to fight poverty and other related abuses on children, hence the need for parents to give topmost priority to the education of their children.
“Education is the leeway to success in life, a route to escape from poverty box and it is the bedrock of every society as knowledge is power,” the statement said.
The number three citizen described children as special gift from God, while urging parents to take adequate care of their children in their interest and for the overall development of the country.
Besides, he advised parents to live an exemplary life by inculcating good moral values in their children.
Abdullahi congratulated the children on their day, describing their day as unique and worth celebrating.
He called for special prayers for the survival, good health and growth of children as leaders of tomorrow.
The speaker reaffirmed the state assembly’s commitment to always protect the right of the children in order to better their lots. (NAN)

Port Harcourt, Sept. 21, 2017 (NAN) A media expert, Malam Isma’ila Funtua, has urged the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) to curb abuses in online and social media platforms in the country.
Funtua gave the task in his opening remarks as the Chairman of the 13th All Nigeria Editors’ Conference and Extraordinary Convention in Port Harcourt on Thursday.
Funtua, who is also the Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) Governing Council, said the media was being attacked by unqualified individuals.
He said that Nigeria was the only country where news published online was made available to readers free without charge.
“The leadership of the NGE should be focussed to advancing journalism practice as watchdog of the society.
“Nigeria is the only country where news online are free which is not so in many countries.
“The NGE should check abuse with focus to avoiding being unbiased and disassociate itself from collecting gratification,” he said.
Funtua also enjoined publishers and media owners to pay salaries of their workers, adding that prompt payment of salaries of workers will discourage gratification in the profession.
He said that the nation’s media industry was fiercely competitive and among the fastest growing sectors in the country. (NAN)

Maiduguri, March 16, 2017 (NAN) The Acting General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division of Nigerian Army, Brig.- Gen. Victor Ezugwu, on Thursday pledged to support the Special Board of Inquiry on alleged human rights abuses by troops in the North East.

Ezugwu made the pledge when he met the team led by the Chairman, retired Maj.- Gen. Ahmed Jibrin, at the headquarters of  the division at Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri.

He told the team of investigators that the division respected the rights of detainees in custody of “Operation Lafiya Dole Theater Command” in line with the provisions of various Charters and Protocols of the United Nations.

Ezugwu stated that detainees mostly comprising Boko Haram suspects were well taken care of in line with international best practices, adding that part of his priority is to improve on available facilities  in addition to maintenance of healthy environment.

According to him, the personnel handling detainees are always admonished to be humane while dealing with suspects and detainees in custody.

“We adhere strictly to all protocols and conventions relating to rights of detainees,’’ Ezugwu said.

He said the Chief of Army Staff has approved for the movement of screened detainees to the State Government to create space at the holding facility of the Joint Interrogation Centre.

Responding, Jibrin said they were in the region to investigate veracity of the allegation of human rights abuses and violations made by Amnesty International, urging the division to support the team in carrying out the task.

He congratulated troops of Operation Lafiya Dole for the successes recorded so far in the fight against insurgency in the North East.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Amnesty International in its latest report alleged misconduct and violation of human rights against the Nigerian Army.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.- Gen. Tukur Buratai, constituted the board following the Amnesty International’s allegations.

Part of the board’s terms of reference is to find out the facts behind the allegations to enable the relevant authorities to take appropriate actions.

However, Buratai charged the board not to probe or revisit cases of abuse that had been investigated by state governments or the National Human Rights Commission.

He also urged members of the board to justify the confidence reposed in them as they were selected based on competence and merit to serve.

“I implore you to leave no stone unturned to come up with a report that will elucidate the facts to all and assist the Nigerian Army in taking appropriate actions,” he said.

The board was set up in line with the provision of Section 172(1) of the Armed Forces Act CAP A20 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. (NAN) ABI/OSA/MST
