Serie A: Atalanta hand rudderless AC Milan 5-goal thrashing

Serie A
Milan (Italy), Dec. 22, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Alejandro Gomez scored a stunning individual goal and Josip Ilicic notched a second half brace as Atalanta thrashed a rudderless AC Milan 5-0 on Sunday

The result helped to hand the former European champions their opponents their joint-heaviest Serie A defeat.

Former AC Milan player Mario Pasalic rubbed further salt into their wounds by also scoring.

It was the fourth time AC Milan have lost a Serie A match by a five-goal margin and the first since 1998.

AC Milan are 10th in the table with 21 points while Atalanta climbed to fifth with 31 points.

It helped Atalanta to cap an outstanding year which saw them qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time and reach the last 16.

“It’s been a fantastic year which has been crowned by today’s performance,” said Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini.

His opposite number Stefano Pioli said that Milan “approached the match in the wrong way and you just can’t afford to do that against this team. This cannot be the real AC Milan.”

“Today’s performance was seriously insufficient,” added Pioli, Milan’s second coach of the season after his predecessor Marco Giampaolo was fired after only seven games.

“I expected a reaction from us in the second half but it didn’t come. In fact, we were even worse.”

Gomez opened the scoring in the 10th minute, nutmegging a hapless Andrea Conti before firing a right foot shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma in the 10th minute.

Pasalic, who clipped the crossbar before half-time, diverted Robin Gonsens’ cross-shot into the net in the 61st minute, although he refused to celebrate his goal.

Ilicic then scored twice in a nine-minute spell to turn it into a humiliation for AC Milan as their defence fell apart.

The Slovenia forward collected a pass on the right, outfoxed his marker and drilled his shot past Donnarumma in the 63rd minute.

Then he curled a delightful effort into the top corner from outside the area.

Davide Calabria cleared a shot off the line but there was still more to come as Luis Muriel ran onto a through ball, outran an AC Milan defender.

He evaded Donnarumma as the goalkeeper rushed out of his area and added the fifth.

The referee spared AC Milan further punishment by mercifully adding on only one minute of stoppage time. (Reuters/NAN)

AC Milan beaten again as Fiorentina stroll to victory at San Siro

Defeat
Milan (Italy), Sept. 30, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) AC Milan’s nightmare start to the 2019/2020 Serie A season continued on Sunday when they fell to a 3-1 defeat at home to Fiorentina and had a man sent off.

Erick Pulgar put the visitors ahead from the penalty kick spot.

Then, Gaetano Castrovilli doubled their lead, after Mateo Musacchio had been shown a straight red card for a rash challenge early in the second half.

AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma saved a Federico Chiesa penalty kick.

But Fiorentina got their third goal through Franck Ribery, before Rafael Leao pulled back a consolation for the hosts with 10 minutes remaining.

AC Milan’s third consecutive defeat in just over a week heaps more pressure on embattled coach Marco Giampaolo and leaves them in 16th place on six points,
one point above the relegation zone.

Fiorentina have now earned their second win in a row to lift them up to ninth place on eight points.(Reuters/NAN)

Piatek penalty kick gives Milan win over 10-man Verona

Serie A
Verona (Italy), Sept. 16, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) AC Milan’s Krzysztof Piatek returned to the starting line-up and converted the winner with a penalty kick in a hard-fought 1-0 victory at 10-man Hellas Verona in Serie A on Sunday.

The Polish striker was dropped by coach Marco Giampaolo for the win over Brescia before the international break, but he led the line at the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi and opened his account for the season in a nervy win.

Verona debutant Mariusz Stepinski was shown a straight red card for a high boot after 21 minutes but the promoted hosts put in a spirited performance after going a man down.

Piatek went into the game with one goal in his last nine league appearances, but he made no mistake from the penalty kick spot in the 68th minute after Koray Gunter was penalised for handball.

Davide Calabria was sent off for AC Milan deep in stoppage time but the visitors held on to climb to seventh place on six points, two points ahead of 11th-placed Verona.(Reuters/NAN)

Manchester United beat AC Milan on penalties in Cardiff

Pre-season

Cardiff (UK), Aug. 3, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Manchester United beat AC Milan 5-4 on penalties after their International Champions Cup match in Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium ended 2-2 in regulation time on Saturday.

United opened the scoring in their final pre-season match through Marcus Rashford, who took advantage of Milan’s high backline to make a run into space to collect Nemanja Matic’s long ball.

The 21-year-old cut back into the box and dribbled past two defenders before firing a right-footed shot past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma into the bottom corner with the help of a deflection off Milan captain Alessio Romagnoli’s heel.

However, their lead lasted only 12 minutes when Milan’s high press allowed the Italian side to win the ball back in the final third when United tried to play out from the back.

Matic lost possession a few yards outside his own box and the ball eventually fell to midfielder Suso, who took a shot from range to beat a diving David de Gea and made it 1-1.

The former Liverpool player then created the second goal when he whipped in a cross from a short corner, with Samu Castillejo’s header deflected into the net off United centre back Victor Lindelof.

Substitute Jesse Lingard scored the equaliser, when set up by a through ball from Anthony Martial, with a low shot from an acute angle to send the game into a penalty shootout.

It was all square at 4-4 in the shootout when De Gea saved Daniel Maldini’s effort, after which new recruit Daniel James scored the decisive spot kick to give United the win.

Piatek on target again as AC Milan close gap on Inter

Serie A
Milan (Italy), Feb. 23, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) AC Milan continued their impressive run of form as second half goals gave them a 3-0 win over Empoli in Serie A on Friday.

Gennaro Gattuso’s fourth-placed side are now unbeaten in their last eight league matches and the latest victory moved them within a point of third-placed Inter Milan.

Polish striker Krysztof Piatek, who has made an explosive start to his time at the club, put AC Milan in front at the San Siro.

It was his seventh goal in five games since joining the former champions from Genoa in January.

Piatek, who had been too isolated in the first half, reacted well four minutes after the interval to slide the ball home after a neat passing move from the Rossoneri.

Two minutes later Franck Kessie doubled the lead for AC Milan with a deft chip after a fine run and through ball from Spanish winger Samu Castillejo.

The lively Castillejo added the third, meeting a low cross from Andrea Conti with an angled side-foot finish.

It could have been four for Milan when Fabio Borini had the ball in the net, but the effort was disallowed for offside following a VAR review.

Serie A leaders Juventus visit Bologna on Sunday, while second-placed Napoli travel to Parma.

Inter Milan will hope to regain their four-point advantage over AC Milan when they play at Fiorentina on Sunday.(Reuters/NAN)

Brilliant Piatek double sends AC Milan into Coppa Italia semi-finals

Coppa Italia
Milan (Italy), Jan. 30, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Poland striker Krzysztof Piatek scored twice on his first start for AC Milan as they beat Napoli 2-0 to reach the Coppa Italia semi-finals on Tuesday.

Piatek joined AC Milan last week for a fee reported to be 35 million euros (40 million dollars) from Genoa, after netting 13 goals in 19 Serie A appearances.

But he was the star of the show as last season’s finalists were too strong for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

The 23-year-old needed 11 minutes to open the scoring.

He latched onto Diego Laxalt’s long ball before speeding past Nikola Maksimovic to fire into the bottom corner across Alex Meret in the visitors’ goal.

The striker then produced an individual moment of brilliance a quarter of an hour later.

He beat two Napoli defenders before finding the top corner in a scintillating first half display from Gennaro Gattuso’s side.

Napoli were much-improved after the break and went close through Faouzi Ghoulam and Adam Ounas, but were unable to find a way back into the game.

Fiorentina host AS Roma and title holders Juventus visit Atalanta on Wednesday, before Inter Milan face Lazio on Thursday in the remaining quarter-finals.(Reuters/NAN)

Europa League: Arsenal, Milan win, as Celtic slump in Salzburg

Europa League

Baku (Azerbaijan), Oct. 4, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) A second-string Arsenal enjoyed a 3-0 win in Azerbaijan against Qarabag in the Europa League on Thursday while AC Milan beat Greece’s Olympiakos 3-1.

Eighteen-year-old Emile Smith Rowe, a product of the club’s academy was on target as the Gunners maintained their winning start in the competition.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Matteo Guendouzi also scored for Unai Emery’s side who sit atop Group E with six points.

Milan trailed to a Miguel Angel Guerrero goal at the San Siro but a late flurry of goals ensured victory for Gennaro Gattuso’s side.

Patrick Cutrone scored twice for the Italians and Argentine Gonzalo Higuain was also on target as Group F side Milan also made it two wins out of two.

RB Salzburg came back from a goal down to beat Scotland’s Celtic 3-1 in Austria.

Odsonne Edouard’s cool finish put Celtic in front in the second minute but Munas Dabbur and Takumi Minamino scored after the break.

Celtic’s James Forrest was sent off after a foul in the area and Dabbur slotted home the resulting penalty to put the game beyond Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Substitute Lucas Alario scored a brace for Bayer Leverkusen in their 4-2 win over Cypriot side AEK Larnaca.

Last year’s runners-up Marseille are in action later against Cypriot side Apollon as are Sevilla, winners of the competition three times between 2013 and 2016, and Chelsea. (Reuters/NAN)

Arsenal to meet AC Milan in Europa League’s last 16

NAN-S-17
Draw
Nyon (Switzerland), Feb. 23, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Seven-time European champions AC Milan will face Arsenal in the standout last 16 tie in the UEFA Europa League after the draw was made in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday.

It will be the first time they are meeting since Milan won 4-3 on aggregate to reach the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals in 2012 where they lost to FC Barcelona.

Spanish favourites Atletico Madrid take on Lokomotiv Moscow while Milan’s Serie A rivals Lazio will face Dinamo Kiev.

Borussia Dortmund, another club having to settle for Europe’s secondary club competition after falling out of the Champions League, face Austria’s FC Salzburg.

French club Olympique Lyonnais, whose ground will host the final, play CSKA Moscow while former European champions Olympique de Marseille face Athletic Bilbao.

The remaining two ties are RB Leipzig against Zenit St Petersburg and Portugal’s Sporting Lisbon versus Viktoria Plzen.

Milan, playing in Europe after a three-year absence, had improved under former player Gennaro Gattuso.

Gattuso had taken them on an 11-match unbeaten run, but they were still adrift in the race for UEFA Champions League places, lying seventh in the Italian Serie A.

Arsenal, who failed to qualify for the Champions League this season for the first time in 20 years, look unlikely to return via a top-four finish in the English Premier League.

With a UEFA Champions League spot up for grabs for the UEFA Europa League winners, the clash between the two powerhouses takes on added significance.

The six previous matches between the sides have seen both win twice.

Arsenal prevailed 3-0 in the most recent clash at The Emirates, having lost 0-4 in the San Siro in the first leg of their 2012 UEFA Champions League tie.

The English side reached the last 16 in spite of losing 1-2 at home to Swedish club Ostersunds on Thursday.

On their part, Milan beat Bulgarian side Ludogorets.(Reuters/NAN)
