Adamawa vs Warri Wolves’ NPFL match abandoned as fans attack officials

Gombe, March 9, 2020 (NAN) The Match Day 23 fixture between Adamawa United Football Club of Yola and Warri Wolves in the 2019/2020 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) was abandoned on Sunday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the match played at the Pantami Stadium in Gombe was abandoned after an assault on match officials.

The attack came immediately the centre referee ended the match’s first half.

Warri Wolves were leading by a lone goal scored by Abu Azeez in the 21st minute of the match when fans of the home team ran into the field of play.

One of the fans attacked the centre referee with a catapult while others hit him with their fist before policemen quickly intervened, pushing back the fans from the field of play.

The match officials and the match’s referees assessor who rushed into the field of play were quickly surrounded by policemen to protect them.

The officials were confined to the centre of the pitch, where they were making calls, ostensibly to give situation reports to officials of the Abuja-based League Management Company (LMC).

NAN also reports that after waiting for over 70 minutes on the field of play, two police vans later drove into the field of play to convey the officials out of the stadium.

Warri Wolves’ team bus was also driven into the field of play to take away the visiting team and their officials under heavy security escort.

Journalists, especially cameramen, were also attacked by the fans who made attempts to destroy video and other recordings of the development.(NAN)

Rangers spank Adamawa United 2-0

Enugu, March 1, 2020 (NAN) Rangers International Football Club of Enugu on Sunday humbled visiting Adamawa United of Yola 2-0 in a 2019/2020 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Match Day 22 fixture.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Isaac Loute and Israel Abia scored for the home team after several missed chances.

Loute gave Rangers the lead from a free-kick at the edge of the penalty box in the 44th minute.

Abia made it 2-0 for the home team from the penalty kick spot in the 62nd minute, after the defender Mohammed Jiya had hacked down Chinonso Eziekwe.

Speaking after the match, Rangers’ assistant coach Mangut Mbwas said their players performed well especially in the second stanza.

“We are going to work more on our scoring, especially as we missed lots of scoring chances during the match.

“Victory was expected of us and we thank God we were able to deliver after missing several chances.

“The players did well after the interval by closing the visitors down to ensure the win,” Mbwas said.

On his part, Adamawa United’s Ibrahim Bariki said he was not in any way disappointed with the result.

“This is the best of us in all the away matches we have been playing and we will keep improving.

“Rangers are a good team but they overshadowed us with their experience, as my players made some costly mistakes which led to the goals,” Bariki said.(NAN)

NPFL: Adamawa United beat visiting FC IfeanyiUbah

Gombe, Feb. 23, 2020 (NAN) Adamawa United Football Club of Yola on Sunday defeated visiting FC IfeanyiUbah of Nnewi 2-1 in a Match Day 21 fixture of the 2019/2020 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Jibrin Abubakar and Idris Abubakar scored for the hosts in the match’s 12th and 69th minutes respectively at the Pantami Stadium in Gombe.

The visitors scored their lone goal through Ikenna Cooper in the 67th minute.

Reacting to the result, Ibrahim Bariki, the coach of Adamawa United, told NAN that his players did their best and he was satisfied with the win.

While expressing disappointment with the officiating of the match’s first half, Bariki said: “I was not angry. It’s just that in the first half, the referee was trying to intimidate us.”

On his team’s poor away record, the coach said he and his colleagues in the team’s technical crew were working very hard to improve that aspect.

Also speaking, the coach of the visiting team, Uche Ukagbue who commended the officiating, said he felt “very bad’’ that his team’s goalkeeper gave away two cheeky goals.

NAN also reports that Bariki had attempted to assault one of the match officials.

The home also fans threw sachet water and shoes at match officials as policemen escorted them into their dressing room.

The incident delayed the commencement of the second half by 15 minutes as the players had to wait on the field of play for the match officials.

Speaking on the home fans’ attitude, Okagbue said their reaction was part of football.

“Fans are not educated. They don’t know the rules and laws of the game, and that’s why they act unnecessarily.”(NAN)
