Multinationals key to ending open defecation – Minister

Abuja, Jan. 31, 2020 (NAN) Federal Government on Friday called on all multinational corporations to support its efforts toward ending open defecation in the country.

The Minister of Water Resources, Mr Suleiman Adamu, said this while receiving members of the Organised Private Sector in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (OPS-WASH) in Abuja.

According to him, members of the OPS-WASH) are critical to meet the government’s target of increasing access to potable water.

He said that President Muhammadu Buhari’s target of taking 10 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years could be realised with investment in the water and sanitation sector.

Adamu said that Nigeria could not continue to pay lip service to issues of sanitation and hygiene, adding that with renewed commitment and partnerships with the private sector, it would be attainable.

The minister said that the national campaign was to end open defecation by 2025, and the WASH Action Plan was the strategy that was being used.

He described the role of behavioural change among the populace as very important.

“Our focus is on behavioural change; we are using the Community-led Total Sanitation approach, we are fully aligned and partnering with the private sector because we can’t continue to do these things in isolation.

“Efforts of the private sector is still a tip of the iceberg, so, we need to scale up.

“That’s why we are trying to bring everyone together, so that we will have that scale; because that is the only way we can achieve the sustainable development goals.

“If we continue to work the way we are operating, Coca-Cola is doing this, this one is doing that, this state government is doing that, we won’t be able to go far; that is why we brought out the concept of partnering with the private sector.”

Adamu said that one of the reasons the millennium development goals failed to reach its target was because all tiers of government relied on budgetary allocations, noting that Federal Government could not do it alone.

Earlier, Mr Clem Ugorji, Public Affairs and Communications Director, West Africa Business Unit, Coca-Cola, said the aim of the visit was to pledge the organisation’s commitment toward meeting the sustainable development goals on water and sanitation.

Ugorji said the organisation saw the need to intervene and change the narratives of water in the country, hence the development of a 10-year strategy, which commences in 2021.

He said that the corporation was partnering with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), in its Water and Development Alliance, working in diverse countries to make its impact felt by larger communities.

“In Kano State, we have a WASH programme that encompasses water supply, hygiene and sanitation; both infrastructure and behavioural change campaign that we implemented in about 16 local government areas.

“And I am pleased to say that the project was implemented with a local implementing partner, the Women Farmers Association of Nigeria.

“The thing is that we don’t just do water, we do water and integrate it into the life of the community. So, you have water for drinking, washing and agriculture support, those programmes are still running now.”

Dr Nicholas Igwe, the National Coordinator, Organised Private Sector (OPS-WASH), said that the role of private sector in scaling up water and sanitation services in the country was very important.

He called for more commitment from all stakeholders, especially with the provisions of the Corporate Social Responsibility and how WASH access could promote value chain in job creation. (NAN)

Sen. Adamu urge Nigerians to reject divisive calls

Keffi (Nasarawa State), Aug. 11,2019 (NAN) Sen. Abdullahi Adamu (APC-Nasarawa West) has called on Nigerians to reject divisive calls by some unpatriotic elements.

He urged Nigerians to engage in activities that would promote peace, unity progress and development of the country.

Adamu made the appeal on Sunday while speaking with newsmen in Keffi.

He said that the nation can only achieve meaningful progress and development in an atmosphere of peace and stability, hence the need for Nigerians to embrace peace.

The lawmaker said that peace is priceless and non-negotiable while urging all and sundry to embrace togetherness.

Adamu,nwho is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Agriculture, also urged the Muslim Ummah and other Nigerians to pray fervently for peace, unity and for the development of the country.

“I congratulate Muslim faithful on the celebration of Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

“Let Nigerians engage in activities that will bind us together as we must stay together irrespective of our affiliations in the interest of peace and development.

“Nigerians should always make statements that would promote our peace and togetherness,” he said.

Besides, Adamu urged Nigerians to support the present administration to enable the leaders deliver on the much needed dividends of democracy to the electorate.

“We should wish our leaders well and support them so that together we can take the country to the next level of development,” he added.

He also appealed to Nigerians to continue to live in peace, be law abiding, respect constituted authorities and tolerate one another irrespective of their affiliations.

The senator restated his commitment to provide quality leadership to his constituents and Nigerians at large for the overall development of the country. (NAN)

Keffi (Nasarawa State), Sept. 27, 2018 (NAN) Alhaji Aliyu Tijjani-Ahmed, an APC senatorial aspirant, says he will defeat Sen. Abdullahi Adamu at the party’s primaries to represent Nasarawa West Senatorial District at the National Assembly.
Tijjani-Ahmed, who resigned as the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Education to challenge Adamu, made this known on Thursday in Keffi during the flag off of his campaign.
“I am sure of winning the party’s ticket at the Oct. 2 primaries,’’ he boasted.
He said that power belongs to God and expressed hope that he would win during the party’s primaries and eventually win at the general election in 2019.
“I will win my election by God’s grace and no going back on my senatorial ambition,” he said.
He promised to initiate good policies and programmes that would enhance the overall wellbeing of his constituents.
The aspirant also promised to empower women and youths of the constituency, if given the mandate.
“I will promote your welfare by providing the much needed dividend of democracy to the people of the senatorial district, if elected,” he said.
He also promised improved and effective quality representation, assuring that he will not renege on his promises.
He commended Gov. Tanko Al-Makura for his development strides across all sectors of the economy, pointing out that they have direct bearing on the lives of the people of the state.
He urged the people of the state and Nigerians at large to support the re-election bid of President Muhammadu Buhari and the senatorial ambition of Al-Makura in order to enjoy more dividends of democracy.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that both Adamu and Tijjani-Ahmed are aspiring to win the ticket of the APC to run in the 2018 general elections.
Adamu is the incumbent senator representing the district at the red chambers.
Also speaking at the event, Mr Samuel Akala, the Executive Chairman, Karu Local Government Council of the state, who spoke on behalf of five other local government chairmen in the zone, pledged to support the senatorial ambition of the aspirant to enable him win his election.
“On behalf of the Executive Chairmen of Toto, Nasarawa, Keffi and Kokona Local Governments, we have agreed to work for the success of Alhaji Aliyu Tijjani-Ahmed, our senatorial aspirant,” he said.
Earlier, Mr Benjamin Bakka, the Director-General of Tijjani-Ahmed Campaign Organisation, described the aspirant as a man of integrity and unquestionable character.
He appealed to delegates to vote for the aspirant to bring them the needed change. (NAN)

2019: Nasarawa APC stakeholders endorse Buhari for 2nd term

Keffi (Nasarawa State), May 20, 2018 (NAN) Gov. Tanko Al-Makura of and other major stakeholders in Nasarawa State on Sunday endorsed President Muhammadu Buhari for a second term to consolidate on the gains of his laudable achievements.
Al-Makura made this known on Sunday in Keffi during a rally organised by a youth group known as ‘Nasarawa State APC Youth Awareness Group’, to endorse Sen. Abdullahi Adamu for a third term at the National Assembly.
The governor said that the endorsement of Buhari by the people was because of his laudable achievements which have direct bearing on the lives of Nigerians.
He said that Adamu was also endorsed for a third terms because of his track record of achievements, urging the people of the western senatorial zone of the state to support the duo’s re-election bid in order to enjoy more dividends of democracy.
According to him, Buhari had done a lot and is still doing his best in the areas of fighting corruption, improving security, economic revival and national stability.
“We are here to rejoice with you the entire people of Nasarawa West Senatorial district because Sen. Adamu is your son, a committed party man, a faithful member of APC and a die heart of President Buhari.
“As far as we are concerned, the election is won already but we are only waiting for the main celebration to come when the election will be conducted.
“We appreciate him (Sen. Adamu) for all the good work he had done and is still doing for the zone, the state and the country at large,” he said.
Al-Makura restated his commitment to continue to key into good policies and programmes that have direct bearing on the lives of the people of the state.
The senator also acknowledged Buhari’s effort at ridding the country of corruption and called for prayers for the president to succeed.
Adamu, who accepted the call by the group to re-contest the Senate seat in 2019, thanked the youths for organising the rally in his honour.
“Youths and women, among others, have being calling on me to re-contest to continue and to maintain my position as senator come 2019 and today, I have answered their calls,’’ he said.
On his part, the Minister of State for Environment, Alhaji Jibrin Usman, also drummed support for the re-election bids of Buhari and Sen. Adamu to enable them move the country forward.
Mr Philip Shekwo, the state APC Chairman, also said that Buhari and Adamu deserved re-election considering their laudable achievements which have direct bearing on the lives of the people of the state.
He said that the re-election bid of Buhari is non-negotiable and was based on the president’s laudable achievements.
The Leader of the group, Mr Ibrahim Abdullahi, had earlier said that they have decided to organise the rally in honour of Sen. Adamu considering his track record of achievements and contribution to the progress of the party.

APC stakeholders pass confidence vote on Sen. Adamu

Keffi (Nasarawa State), Feb. 26, 2018 (NAN) Federal and state lawmakers under the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Nasarawa State have passed a vote of confidence on the leadership qualities of Sen. Abdullahi Adamu (APC-Nasarawa West).
The legislators expressed their confidence on Adamu during a meeting with the state party officials and some critical stakeholders on Monday in Keffi, Nasarawa State.
Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Speaker, Nasarawa State House of Assembly, moved the motion for the vote of confidence which was seconded by Rep. Mohammed Ibrahim (APC-Nasarawa/Toto), at the meeting.
Abdullahi told newsmen at the end of the meeting that the confidence vote was passed on Adamu after assessing his positive contributions to development of humanity and at the Senate in the last six years.
“We the lawmakers, both at the federal and state levels, under APC from Nasarawa West including the state party executives led by the Chairman, Mr Philip Shekwo, and critical stakeholders are here to discuss on some vital national issues that affect our party and the present administration in general.
“We are loyal and in total support of what our distinguished Sen. Abduallhi Adamu is doing in defence of truth, in defence of our party and in defence of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, and we urged him to stand firm on that.
“We told him to continue to stand firm in defence of truth and we are solidly behind him and President Buhari beyond 2019,” he said.
The speaker called on the people to continue to pray and give their maximum support to Adamu and Buhari to enable them succeed in the tasks ahead of them.
He noted that Adamu, who was a two time governor of the state, had performed credibly well in office, hence the need for the people of the senatorial district to support his re-election come 2019.
The Nasarawa state number three citizen also called on APC faithful to remain united and work for the progress of the party at all levels beyond 2019.
Besides, Abdullahi called on Nigerians to continue to live in peace and tolerate one another irrespective of their ethnic, religious and political affiliation for the overall development of the country.

Responding, Adamu thanked the stakeholders and assured them of his continued stand in defence of truth, his party and the Buhari administration.
The senator also promised to pursue development issues that would better the lives of Nigerians. (NAN)
