La Liga’s Alaves confirm 15 positive coronavirus cases

Madrid, March 18, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Spanish La Liga side Alaves have confirmed a total of 15 positive coronavirus cases, a club statement said on Wednesday.

The news comes after the Basque club revealed on Saturday that two members of their coaching staff had tested positive for the virus.

None of those affected have displayed any symptoms, they added.

“There have been 15 positive cases, three of which are from the Deportivo Alaves first team squad and seven members of the coaching team,” the statement said.

“None of the Kirolbet Baskonia (the club’s basketball side) squad have tested positive. There have also been five club employees who have been affected.

“The club took the decision to undertake the tests in accordance with our policy of responsibility towards people who form part of our family.

“The results show that it was the best and quickest manner in which to find the cases and put the necessary preventative measures in place to reduce, in any way possible, any more spreading.

“Those who have given positive results do not have any symptoms and are well.”

Spain is Europe’s second-most affected country by the virus after Italy, with 558 confirmed deaths and almost 14,000 cases by Wednesday afternoon, with the country in lockdown.

Citizens are only allowed to leave their homes for essential activities such as going to the supermarket or buying medicine.

Elderly people and those with other health conditions are considered high-risk.(Reuters/NAN)

Confident Real Madrid stroll to fourth straight win

Madrid, Feb. 3, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Karim Benzema scored his sixth goal in four games as Real Madrid beat Alaves 3-0 on Sunday for a fourth successive La Liga victory.

The win took the European champions to within eight points of leaders FC Barcelona.

The French striker knocked a cross from Spanish left back Sergio Reguilon into the net from close range on the half hour mark.

He broke the deadlock against an organised Alaves side who beat Real Madrid 1-0 earlier in the season at Mendizorrotza.

Santiago Solari’s side looked comfortable without hitting top gear.

They did not seal the victory until in-form Brazilian Vinicius Jr. tapped into the net in the 80th minute to score his first goal in La Liga.

Spain international Alvaro Odriozola had a goal ruled out for offside but substitute Mariano Diaz completed the scoring with a diving header.

Real Madrid, the only top-three side in La Liga to win at the weekend, moved on to 42 points, two behind second-placed Atletico Madrid, who lost 1-0 at Real Betis.

They are eight points adrift of Barca who drew 2-2 at home to Valencia on Saturday. (Reuters/NAN)

La Liga: Alaves go fourth with victory over troubled Valencia

Alava (Spain), Jan. 5, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Alaves continued their excellent home form by recovering to beat struggling Spanish powerhouse Valencia 2-1 on Saturday to climb into fourth place in La Liga.

By the victory, the Basques side also boosted their chances of qualifying for the Champions League for the first time.

Valencia captain, Dani Parejo gave the visitors the lead with a swerving free kick in the 14th minute but Alaves soon hit back.

Striker Borja Baston pulled the 2001 UEFA Cup runners-up level in the 21st with a scrappy, deflected shot from inside the area.

Midfielder Tomas Pina put Alaves ahead in first-half stoppage time after a period of heavy pressure.

Alaves are the only side in Spain’s top flight alongside Atletico Madrid to still be unbeaten at home this season, and now has 31 points from 18 games, one ahead of European champions Real Madrid who host Real Sociedad on Sunday.

It also saw the Basques reach their highest points total in the first half of a La Liga season.
