Chile to quarantine returning football stars Sanchez and Vidal, health ministry says

Santiago, March 11, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Chilean football stars Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal will be quarantined when they return to their home country from Europe, Chile’s health minister said on Tuesday.

The players, who are signed to European clubs, are to feature in a World Cup qualifier this month.

They are due to fly first to Uruguay for a World Cup qualifier on March 26 and then to Chile to face Colombia.

Italy announced a quarantine and advised against all but non-essential travel until April 3 after its death toll from coronavirus jumped by 168 to 631 this week.

“We do not make any distinction by people’s profession because nobody is immune to this virus and indeed the quarantine determined today for Italy applies to everyone,” said Health Minister Jaime Mañalich, according to local news website Emol.

“Of course, if these players want to work out on a machine in their homes, or all be quarantined together at Juan Pinto Duran (the national football stadium), then that’s their call.”

A source at the Football Federation of Chile told Emol it had been told nothing about quarantine plans for the players.

“So far there are no changes to our plans,” a source said. “What the minister says comes as a surprise.”

Spain has suspended flights from Italy and also advised against all non-essential travel.

It has so far reported 36 deaths and 1,639 confirmed cases, while Italy has at least 10,149.

Alexis Sánchez plays for Inter Milan and Vidal plays for FC Barcelona.

Another Chilean player likely to be impacted is Gary Medel, who plays for the Italian club Bologna.

Sanchez’s team has been playing Serie A matches in empty stadiums after the Italian government banned large gatherings last week.

At around the same time, there was a flurry of claims on social media that Sanchez himself may have contracted the coronavirus.

The reports were later explained by a poor translation of a story about Sanchez’s team being impacted by the games ban.

Chile is tracking people returning from countries affected by coronavirus in a bid to contain its spread.

So far, 17 cases have been confirmed in the South American country.(Reuters/NAN)

Sanchez on target as Manchester United beat Huddersfield

Abuja, Feb. 3, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Manchester United’s Alexis Sanchez scored his first goal for the club while Romelo Lukaku was also on target as the hosts defeated Huddersfield Town 2-0 at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the result meant the Red Devils closed the gap at the top of the English Premier League (EPL) to 13 points.

After Burnley had held league leaders Manchester City to a 1-1 draw at Turf Moor in an early kick-off, the pressure was on Manchester United to take advantage.

But they struggled to find any rhythm in the first half as Huddersfield stood firm.

However, 10 minutes into the second half the hosts went in front when Lukaku met Juan Mata’s cross to score his fourth goal in his last six appearances.

Sanchez was then given the chance to cap his home debut 21 minutes from time when he was brought down just inside the area by Michael Hefele.

And much to his relief, he tapped home the rebound after Jonas Lossl had saved his initial effort from the penalty kick spot.

The Chilean opened his Manchester United account after joining from Arsenal on reportedly the biggest ever contract in Premier League history.

Struggling Huddersfield offered little as an attacking force in the game and Manchester United saw out the victory with ease to at least put some pressure on rivals Manchester City.

Huddersfield dropped to second-bottom after a fifth successive league defeat.

After winning promotion last season, it was the first time this season that Huddersfield had found themselves in the relegation zone.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was satisfied with having broken down the visitors’ defensive wall on a day when they commemorated the 60th anniversary of the Munich air disaster.

Eight players had died in the crash.

“We had to be patient but had to keep the intensity high and the pressure,” Mourinho said.

“We had to break down the Berlin wall organised so well by (Huddersfield manager) David Wagner.”

“It was nice for Alexis Sanchez to win a match, the first at home,” added Mourinho. “It was not the goal of his dreams, but it is a goal.”(Reuters/NAN)
