Force Headquarters win shooting event with 14 gold

Awka, March 6, 2020 (NAN) Force Headquarters (FHQ) Abuja, on Friday continued their exploit at the ongoing 2020 Nigeria Police Games in Anambra with the team winning 14 gold, 8 silver and 5 bronze to top the shooting medals table.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that shooting event was concluded on Friday at the Police Training College, Orji River, Enugu State.

A breakdown of the gold medals won by FHQ showed that 4 medals came from individual events while 10 gold were picked from the team events.

Zone 7 also made their presence felt as they won 5 gold medals comprising of 3 individual gold and 2 gold medals from team events, while Zone 1 registered their presence after securing only one gold in individual event.

Also, Team FHQ won 6 individual silver medals and 2 team silver medals while Zone 7 closely followed with 1 individual silver medals and 6 team silver medals.

Zone 6 won an individual silver medal in the competition, while Zone 2 garnered 3 silver and 3 bronze medal.

The 12 biennial Games which started on Feb. 29 would end on March 7 with a closing ceremony at the Dr Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka. (NAN)

Police Games: Force Headquarters dominate track, field events

Awka (Anambra), March 5, 2020 (NAN) The Force Headquarters (FHQ) Abuja is currently leading the pack as organisers released final results of concluded track and field events at the ongoing 2020 Nigeria Police Games in Anambra.

Events concluded late on Wednesday at the Rojenny Stadium Oba, venue of track and field events showed that FHQ clinched gold in five out of eight events.

According to the results, FHQ representatives in Women’s Long Jump, Okoronkwo Precious and Igbinosa Mercy, jumped as far as 5.74m and 5.23m respectively to clinch gold and silver, while Mercy Honesty of Zone 1 jumped 5.17m to take bronze.

FHQ also picked gold and bronze in 10km Walk Race for Men after Lawal Oluwaseyi and Alade Felix walked to the finish line in time of 50:55.77 and 53:27.65 respectively.

In the 400m Hurdles Men, Nathaniel Ezekiel and Akindunjoye Johnson of FHQ took gold and silver in time of 54.19 sec and 54.90 sec respectively, beating Mba Romanus of Zone 9 to bronze with time of 55.97 sec.

Team FHQ also dictated the pace in the Women 5000m as Mamman Helen and Ambo Dorcas crossed the finish line in time of 20:32.74 and 23:26.09 respectively to win gold and bronze.

Mary Joseph of Zone 3 picked the Women 5000m silver with a time of 22:58.51.

The dominance of FHQ for the day was completed when Abasiono Akpan ran the race of her life in the women’s 400m hurdles to beat Comfort Ekanem, from Zone 2 who is the current record holder of World Police Games.

Akpan finished her race in time of 58.27 seconds to clinch gold while Ekanem took the silver.

Oluchi Ofoma also won gold for FHQ in the 800m after running her race in time of 2:15.33

FHQ also showed class in other events like table tennis and martial arts after winning gold medals. (NAN)

Police Games: FHQ, Zone 9 zoom into football final

Awka (Anambra), March 4, 2020 (NAN) Force Headquarters and Zone 9 have qualified for the final of the men’s football event of the Nigeria Police Games currently going on in Awka, Anambra.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the final match will take place on Thursday at the Otuocha township stadium.

James Nicholas secured a third minute goal for Zone 9 against Zone 6 in a titanic semi finals clash.

Zone 6 threw everything into the game in search of an equalizer but goalkeeper John Emeka became a stumbling block to their move.

The second semi finals saw Bolaji Lebi score a brace as Force Headquarters eased to a comfortable 2-0 win against Zone 7 to set up the final match with Zone 9.

Lebi netted his first goal of the encounter 12th minutes into the game and sealed the win on 17th minutes later to put the game beyond the reach of Zone 7.

According to Lebi, who is tournament’s joint top scorer, “Zone 9 are strong, we were together in group B and they defeated us 2-1.

“So, I believe we can avenge that defeat but for sure, the final will be tough,” Lebi said.

Zone 7, who emerged winners in Group A, would now face Zone 6 in third place match at the same venue.

In a related development, Force Headquarters women football team received a rude shock from Zone 2 in one of the matches decided on Wednesday.

The defending champions were handed their surprise defeat when Adeyemi Bashirat capitalised on a defensive error midway into the first half to slot in the only goal of the match.

Chioma Ajunwa, who had attracted spectators to the Otuocha stadium,  was however not listed for the fixture but she instead took position on FHQ bench in a bid to inspire the team.

Ajunwa, who is Nigeria’s first athlete to win gold medal at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, said she wasn’t disappointed with the team’s performance.

“I am not disappointed; in a game like this, one side is bound to win. We know Zone 2 to be a good and strong team. It’s just that our players lost concentration at that moment which led to the goal,” she said. (NAN)

NAF to partner engineering institute for efficiency

Nnewi (Anambra), Nov. 6, 2019 (NAN) Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar says the air force will deepen its partnership with the National Engineering Design Development Institute (NEDDI) for greater efficiency.

Abubakar, who disclosed this during a visit to the NEEDI office complex in Nnewi on Tuesday, said that the partnership would encourage home-made engineering designs.

He expressed happiness with the level of technological advancement at the institute, and promised to improve the working relationship between the institute and the air force.

“We shall tap into the experience and proficiency of this institute by availing our officers training in engineering design,” he said.

Abubakar stated that security remained a critical ingredient in the development of any nation, saying “development can only thrive in a secure atmosphere”.

“As a force, we are prepared to deepen this partnership with NEEDI, we hope to improve on our existing understanding to shore up capacity building.

“This working relationship is in the interest of efficient service to the country,” he said.

In a welcome address, NEDDI’s Managing Director, Mr Arinze Nwosu, said part of the institute’s vision was to push made in Nigeria products to enviable standards.

He said that NEDDI was supporting the industrial sector with necessary engineering designs, adding that “we shall hopefully do better with improved relations with other government agencies.”

“As a government research institute, our mandate is to project made in Nigeria engineering designs to the rest of the world.

“We are already in partnership with some academic institutions and government agencies, we are hopeful that our relationship with the air force will be strengthened,” he said. (NAN)

Anambra Govt. inaugurates rice farm, mills with 10,000 farmers

Abuja, Feb. 16, 2019 (NAN) The Chairman of JOSAN Integrated Rice Mills and Farms, Chief Oliver Okeke, has commended the Anambra Government for the successful inauguration of the JOSAN Rice Mills, with about 10,000 farmers.

Okeke said on Saturday in Abuja that the resuscitation of the JOSAN Giant Mill, formerly Omor Rice Mill, meant that the country would soon bounce back as the largest rice mill in West Africa.

Okeke, who is also the Chairman of Joseph Agro Industries, commended the administration of Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra for rising to the occasion and seeing to the resuscitation of the mills located at Umumbo community.

He said that the industry had a capacity to produce 30,000 metric tons and a current expanded annual capacity of 80,000 metric tons of paddy rice input and 50,000 metric tons of milled rice.

“JOSAN integrated rice mills and farms is a Private Public Partnership (PPP) scheme between Joseph Agro Industries and the Anambra Government.

“JOSAN is first given the former dilapidated World Bank Rice farm in Ufuma in 2015, as a pilot test scheme, whereby JOSAN installed two new rice mills in Ufuma, built all year round irrigation facilities and engaged in a large co-sponsored out-growers scheme with IFAD-value chain.

“JOSAN also won the National award as the IFAD (the agriculture and rural development agency of the United Nations) State off-taker.

“The Anambra Government then handed over the giant mill at Umumbo in 2018 to JOSAN (formerly known as Omor Rice mill) for complete rehabilitation.

“Successive federal and state governments since 1997, were unable to successfully rehabilitate the vandalised and abandoned giant mill. JOSAN did the technical resuscitation and all investments to this effect,” Okeke said in a statement.

According to him, the inauguration of the giant mill is a testimony of the federal and state governments successful agriculture policies to bring in genuine investors into the agriculture sector.

He said: “Anambra State Rice, produced by JOSAN (different from Anambra Rice), was also inaugurated at the event as a testimony to rice that is grown in Anambra, milled in Anambra and packaged in Anambra.

“This will become a proudly Anambra State Rice, ‘made in Nigeria’ product, to reduce the importation of rice and save foreign exchange for Nigeria.”

He appreciated Umumbo community for agreeing to give them 5,000 hectares of land to develop a highly irrigated and mechanised farm which would also see JOSAN be the anchor off-taker for the Lower Anambra Irrigation Project (LAIP) in conjunction with NISRAL, IFAD, FADAMA and other development partners.
