Abuja, March 22, 2020 ( NAN) The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has directed road traffic enforcement officers across the territory to intensify the arrest of drivers who carry in their vehicles  excess  number of passengers.

Mr Ikharo Attah,the Chairman of  FCT Ministerial Task Team on Traffic Management, announced this at an interactive session with newsmen on Sunday in Abuja.

Attah said at a time when the world was fighting the Coronavirus pandemic by advocating social distancing, it would be inappropriate for drivers to have their vehicles jam packed or even overloaded in the  bid to make quick money.

“Those carrying two passengers in front of their vehicles would have their vehicles impounded and driver’s licence seized.

“ Besides the health risks, it is also unsafe as the driver finds it difficult to adjust his gear and hand breaks,” Attah said.

He explained that High Capacity Bus drivers would also be properly checked to ensure that they do not overload their buses.

Attah, therefore, called on operators of all commercial motorcycles and tricycles permitted to operate at the suburbs  to also avoid overloading.

He called on managers of motor parks and transport unions to obey the directive of the FCT minister which limits any gathering to a maximum 50 persons.

The chairman also advised transporters to be observant of their passengers and report those with signs of respiratory challenges to appropriate health authorities for prompt action. (NAN)

Awka, Jan. 31, 2020 (NAN) The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra State command, has arrested one Ezennia Onyeka for  allegedly operating illegal Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) registration centre in Nnewi.
The state Commandant of the corps, Mr David Bille, confirmed the arrest in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Friday.
Bille said the suspect was  arrested in Nnewi, following intelligence report that he was registering JAMB candidates at the cost of between N5,000 and N7,000 each.
Bille said that many unsuspecting candidates had fallen victim to the fraud at the centre, known as 100 Per Cent Computer Center.
He said: “The suspect was charging the unsuspecting candidates above the official N4,700 stipulated by JAMB.
“After careful and discrete investigation carried out by men of NSCDC,  it was uncovered that the cyber cafe being operated by the suspect was not in the list of centres accredited by JAMB to sell its forms.’’
Bille said that the NSCDC operatives, who arrested the suspect, disguised themselves as prospective JAMB candidates.
“The operatives observed that the suspect was exploiting innocent and young Nigerians seeking for brighter future.
Bille said that the suspect admitted the offence and pleaded for forgiveness with a promise to turn over a new leaf.
The commandant said  that investigation was still ongoing and that he would be made to face the full wrath of the law at the end of the investigation. (NAN)

Tehran, Oct. 7, 2019 (dpa/NAN) A Russian journalist arrested in Iran was on Monday detained due to a visa violation, an Iranian government spokesman said, rejecting reports that the woman was accused of espionage.
The spokesman, Ali Rabiei, said it had nothing to do with espionage, adding that the case is being investigated and will soon be cleared.
Reports about the arrest of journalist Yulia Yuzik surfaced on Instagram sometime in September.
Earlier, the Russian embassy in Tehran had expressed the suspicion that Yuzik had been taken into custody under suspicion of espionage.
According to her mother, Julia was accused of working for Israeli secret services.
However, the Iranian Ambassador, Mehdi Sanaei, was asked by the Russian Foreign Ministry to clarify the situation.
Sanaei promised that the journalist would be released soon after clarifying some questions.
In Iran, foreigners who violate visa rules are normally expelled from the country, but are not arrested or even detained for a longer period, unless there is suspicion of illegal activities such as espionage.
However, it is also illegal for journalists without a press visa to enter the country on a tourist visa and to work as journalists without the knowledge of the press office.
The Iranian security authorities usually react quite strongly to this. (dpa/NAN)

Kano, Sept. 2, 2019 (NAN) The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested no fewer than 280 suspects for various crimes in Kano State between January and August this year.
The Zonal Head of the Commission in Kano, Mr Akaninyene Ezima, disclosed this while briefing newsmen in Kano on Monday.
Ezima said the suspects were apprehended for committing crimes bordering on cybercrimes, money laundering and other forms of crimes like ‘black money, wash-wash, foxy scheme and MMM’, among others.
He said the commission had also recovered N550 million and 690,000 dollars during the period under review, pointing out that the 690,000 dollars were recovered at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport.
According to him, the commission is currently pursuing 51 cases of various offences in courts under the zone.
Ezima said investigation into several cases had also attained different stages of completion.
The official advised management of banks operating in the states under the zone to improve their response system in order to protect their customers from being duped by fraudsters.
He noted that most of the crimes were being perpetrated during weekend days when banks were not operating.
“So by improving the response system of the banks, the banks can avert any attempt by such criminals to steal from someone’s account,” he said.
Ezima said the commission had embarked on sensitisation on how to protect themselves from falling victims of MMM, wash-wash and foxy schemed, among other forms of crimes.
He disclosed that the commission had held campaigns in Katsina State on how fraudsters operate.
The EFCC boss said the commission had planned to organise similar programmes in other states under the zone and appealed to members of the public to provide the commission with useful information that would help the commission to curb such activities of fraudsters. (NAN)

Abuja, Aug. 27, 2019 (NAN) The Inter-Security Task Force set up by the Federal Government to conduct joint border security in four geopolitical zones have arrested 33 illegal migrants and seized several items in a week operation.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr Joseph Attah, said this in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday.
Attah explained that as at Monday, 33 illegal migrants were arrested, while 3,560 of 50kg bags of parboiled foreign rice had been seized.
He said 59 bags of NPK fertiliser; 15 vehicles; 12 drums of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS); three engine boats; 65 drums of groundnut oil and four trucks were also confiscated.
According to him, other items seized are 75 gallons of PMS; 29 motorcycles; 68 gallons of vegetable oil, and another 70 jerricans of PMS.
“The exercise, which commenced barely a week ago, has received appreciable support from members of the populace such as border community dwellers and other well-meaning Nigerians.
“The exercise, led by the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) and the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), in collaboration with the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) with other Security and Intelligence agencies, have continued to patrol and secure our border areas.
“While an exercise of this nature is likely to create some inconveniences to members of the public, the overriding interest is to prevent the country against transnational security concerns, such as smuggling, proliferation of small arms and light weapons.
“Other concerned issues are irregular migration, terrorism and armed banditry, among others,” he said.
Attah said this was consistent with the constitutional responsibility of any well-meaning government, hence the need to continue to seek the support of all and sundry to achieve the desired objectives of the exercise.
According to him, this will help to promote a secured, peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the joint border security exercise, codenamed “Exercise Swift Response”, commenced operation on Aug. 20.
It is set up to ensure a better security of the country’s territorial integrity, particularly the land and maritime borders against trans-border security concerns.
The exercise is being coordinated by Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) in the four zones of North-West, North-Central, South-West and South-South geopolitical zones. (NAN)

Abuja, Aug. 20, 2019 (NAN) The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Mohammed Adamu, has commended the police operatives for their painstaking efforts in the re-arrest of alleged Taraba notorious kidnap kingpin, Alhaji Hamisu Wadume.

The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), DCP Frank Mba, disclosed this on Tuesday in a statement in Abuja.

He said Wadume was re-arrested in the late hours of Monday in his hideout at Layin Mai Allo Hotoro area of Kano State.

Mba said the police had been on massive manhunt for the suspect since Aug. 6.

He said the manhunt followed the incident in Ibi, Taraba that led to the killing of three police officers and two civilians as well as injuring of five others.

Mba said the suspect, who was appropriately restrained at the time of the first arrest, was subsequently released by his “rescuers”.

The FPRO said the IGP had expressed his profound gratitude to Nigerians for their show of love and empathy to the Force and the families of the murdered officers and civilians.

“The re-arrest of Wadume, will help in bringing answers to the numerous but hitherto unanswered questions touching on the incident and the larger criminal enterprise of the suspect,” Mba quoted the IGP as saying. (NAN)

Police arrest farmer for alleged murder of business partner

Enugu, Aug. 12, 2019 (NAN) The Police in Enugu State has arrested one Sampson Nwaobasi, an Enugu-based farmer, for allegedly killing his business partner, Mr Friday Ani, over payment of proceed made in farming business.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement on Monday in Enugu that the incident happened on July 31 in Agbani community; while the suspect was arrested on Aug. 7 by police operatives.

Amaraizu said that the deceased and one Paul Eze were all partners in the farming of cucumber as the deceased and Eze had raised money to the suspect, who does the farming, sells same and shares profits.

“It was gathered that his victim, Ani, a student of Enugu State University of Science and Technology and his business associate had met his untimely dead when he had demanded from the suspect payment of his share of the proceed.

“It was gathered they were to share N6 million as the business thrived for four months; however, the suspect allegedly started avoiding his partners which made them believe that he may have craftily reinvested the proceed without them knowing.

“The deceased traced the suspect to the farm to find out what has been happening; and in the farm, misunderstanding arose between them which allegedly resulted in the killing of Ani by the suspect and burying him inside the bush.

“The deceased was said to have been reported missing by relations who could not immediately find out what happened.

“Following suspicious ways the story appeared, Commissioner of Police, Mr Sulaiman Balarabe, directed for investigation in which the suspect was nabbed by police operatives in partnership with neighborhood watch group members from the community where he was hiding,’’ he said.

The police spokesman said that the suspect had been helping police operatives in their investigation in relation to how he allegedly killed his victim and quickly buried him inside the bush.

Amaraizu noted that the suspect had however maintained in his confessionary statement that the money in question is not to the tune of N6 million but N300,000.

He said that the suspect also maintained that he never wanted to kill the deceased and that the deceased wanted to kill him over the money but he had to struggle-out the knife from him and stabbed him to death. (NAN)

Yola, July 9, 2019 (NAN) The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Adamawa has arrested an alleged fake Optometrist operating in Yola.
Addressing newsmen on Tuesday in Yola, the state Commandant of the corps, Mr Nuraddeen Abdullahi, said the suspect, Imuere Ejiro, before his arrest, was allegedly rendering services in two private clinics in Yola.
Abdullahi said the suspect was arrested in possession of photocopies of academic qualification belonging to his younger brother.
He said the suspect was once arrested in Lagos by the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians’ Registration Board of Nigeria, which fined him N200,000.
The commandant, who called for more public support to security agencies in the state, said there was a joint operation going on with other agencies to make things difficult for criminals in the state.
“The NSCDC has also sent some of its personnel to training as Agro-Rangers to contain farmers/herders conflicts in the state,” Abdullahi said.
Reacting to his arrest, the suspect said he operated in Taraba, Lagos and Adamawa states before his arrest.
Ejiro, who insisted that he was a qualified optometrist, said his arrest in Lagos was because he was practicing without registration.
“The board asked me to pay registration fee of N255,000 and I have so far made part payment of N65,000 to the board,” the suspect said.
Meanwhile, the Adamawa branch Chairman of Nigerian Optometric Association, Dr Okafor Ikechukwu, said the association had made contacts and discovered that the suspect was a quack.
“He is a quack and impostor who has been defrauding citizens of Adamawa of their hard earned money and at the same time putting their eye sight at risk by prescribing lens which is not licensed,” Ikechukwu said. (NAN)

N4bn probe: Court orders arrest of Kano Emir’s Chief of Staff, 2 others

Kano, May 28, 2019 (NAN) A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kano on Tuesday ordered the arrest of three persons, including Mannir Sanusi, the Chief of Staff to the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.
The trio were dragged before the court by the Kano State Public Complaint and Anti-corruption Commission for failing to honour its invitation in a N4 billion fraud investigation against the Emir of Kano.
Chief Magistrate Mohammed Idris ordered the arrest of Sanusi, who holds the traditional title of Damburan Kano; Mujitaba Abba, and the Accountant of Kano Emirate Council, Sani Muhammad-Kwaru, over their alleged refusal to honour the commission’s invitation.
The commission wrote to the court seeking for an order of arrest against the three palace officials.
Idris consequently issued and signed the arrest warrant sequel to a motion by Mr Salisu Tahir, Chief State counsel.
Tahir had said that the request was based on the provision of Section 38 of the enabling Law establishing the commission.
NAN recalls that the commission had invited four people in connection to the allegation, of which only Isa Bayero, alias Isa Pilot, who was a former scribe to the Emirate Council, honoured the invitation.
Reacting to the development, the Chairman of the commission, Mr Muhiyi Magaji, said the three persons that have arrest warrant on their heads are the principal suspects in the case.
He explained the commission had already requested security operatives to enforce the order and arrest the suspects. (NAN)

Abuja, April 16, 2019 (NAN) The arrest of the Chief Executive Officer of Galaxy Transportation and Construction Services Ltd by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) is not based on fraud, says an official of the company, Mr Cletus Onoja.
Onoja said in a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja that Mr Babagana Dalori, the Chief Executive Officer of the company was merely taken for investigation by the EFCC following a petition by the company clients.
He said it was not true that Dalori’s arrest and detention was based on fraud or running of phantom schemes.
Onoja explained that what was at stake was that the company could no longer meet its obligations to its clients within the time expected of it for reasons beyond its control.
“As such, some investors who were not satisfied with our explanation and efforts currently put at recovering the loss, petitioned the EFCC even though the matter was civil and not criminal.
“As an obedient citizen of the country, the MD/CEO turned in and gave himself to the Commission’s interrogations,’’ he added.
He said that some of the company clients were disgruntled by the inability of the company to settle their payment as a result of several factors, adding that the company lawyers are currently handling the matter with the EFCC.
According to Onoja, since commencement in 2010, the company has never defaulted in its obligations to remit what is due to each of its investors.
“It is on record that even when the country was in recession in 2016 and 2017, our company did not fail to meet its obligations to pay its clients and business partners,” the official said.
He said the company runs a legitimate transportation and construction services business in over five states in the country with its headquarters in Abuja for the last nine years.
Onoja said that the company’s relationship with its clients remained fundamentally civil, where both parties benefited from the proceeds of the businesses it did.
According to him, it is rather sad that our company is facing this trial at this point after it has enjoyed a steady growth and built strong relationship with its investors.
“The company’s management is working round the clock to overcome the challenges; it is sad that it has already caused serious worries in the minds of our clients and affected our cordial relationship.’’
Onoja listed reasons the company was unable to pay its clients since October 2018 to include the flood in Jere, Kaduna State, where the company lost its largest dredger at its sand mining site overnight.
Others are the suspension of quarry activities in Abuja by the Federal Government for close to three months from October as a result of earth tremors in the capital city. (NAN)
