NSCDC arrests 2 for vandalism and cultivating cannabis

Awka, Feb.18, 2020 (NAN) The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra Command, has arrested one Amobi Okafor for cultivating cannabis.

 

It also has arrested another suspect, Sunday Chukwuneta, for vandalising iron roofing frames belonging to the Federal Government.

Mr David Billie, the state commandant of the NSCDC, paraded the suspects in Awka on Tuesday.

 

He said that Okafor was arrested on Feb.13 at Nri, Anaocha Local Government Area, while Chukwuneta was apprehended in Awka on Feb.14.

 

According to the commandant, Okafor, 45, was arrested at  12:00p.m., for allegedly attacking, matcheting and injuring one Mathias Ajoagu, a 71-year old security man, at Lake City Secondary School, Nri.

 

“Upon credible intelligence report, operatives of NSCDC discovered that Okafor was alleged to be growing  a large expanse of cannabis in a palm plantation at the back of the secondary school where Ajoagu works,’’ he said.

He said that preliminary investigation by the command revealed that the suspect had been in the business for many years now.

 

The NSCDC official said that his operatives recovered machete, fresh leaves suspected to be that of cannabis sativa and other incriminating items from the suspect at the scene.

 

Billie also said that his men on Feb.14 at about 4:34p.m., arrested one Sunday Chukwuneta,50, for vandalising and stealing iron roofing frames being used for the construction of the Federal Secretariat in Awka.

 

He said that the suspect was apprehended within the secretariat behind Ekwueme Square, opposite Anambra State Secretariat in Akwa.

Billie said both suspects had confessed to committing their crimes.

 

He said that Okafor would be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), while the corps would prosecute Chukwuneta.

 

Okafor while answering questions from journalists said that he was not aware the weed growing in his plantation was cannabis.

 

He said that it was the NSCDC officials that told him the weed was a psychotropic substance.

 

Also, Chukwuneta said that those who sold the iron frames to him gave him the impression that the property belonged to them.

“This deal that led to my arrest was the second. I paid them N14, 000 in the first one, before this second trip,’’ he said.(NAN)

Jos, June 22, 2017 (NAN) The Commissioner of Police in Plateau, Mr Peter Babatunde, says the Command has arrested more than 50 armed robbery and culpable homicide suspects in the state from May to date.

Babatunde disclosed this at a news conference in Jos on Thursday.

He said that the command has employed different strategies and measures to stem criminal tide across the state.

“It gladdens my heart to say that from May 2017 to date over 50 armed robbery and culpable homicide suspects have been arrested and put in custody.

“The command in recent times carried out some operations in line with the new challenges in Plateau State and in pursuance with its constitutional mandate of protecting lives and property.

“We have employed different strategies and measures to curtail the serious criminal incidences being faced by in the state.

“I am happy to inform you that we have succeeded in almost all the difficult challenges we have been confronted with, most especially within the Jos metropolis,” he said.

Babatunde listed some of the successful arrests to include three notorious car snatchers, robbery suspects, homicide suspects as well as defilement and rape suspects.

“Among those arrested are a three-man gang that specialised in car snatching. They were arrested on May 16 at Bukuru with four cars and a pistol recovered from them.

“One Bulus Dewan of Barkin Ladi, who is suspected to have stabbed one Garba Dapan of Fan District, is also arrested and is in custody, and the case has since been transferred to the State CIID for discreet investigation.

“A rape suspect, Ali Usman, 35, of Angwan Rogo, is also in police custody for allegedly raping a six-year-old girl.

“Other rape suspects, who are in our custody, include one Sati Usman and Shafiu Samaila, all of Jos North, who were alleged to have raped minors aged three and five  in their neighbourhood,’’ he said.

The commissioner also stated that nine officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) were issued with letters of commendation and cash rewards for smashing a gang of car snatching syndicate.

He assured that the war on criminal activities in the state would be sustained with renewed vigour and determination despite the logistics challenges facing the command. (NAN)

Ado Ekiti, Feb. 15, 2017 (NAN) The Police in Ekiti State on Wednesday linked two brothers of same parents with alleged ritual after they found a severed head with one of them.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Alberto Adeyemi, gave the names of the suspects as David Oluwatosin and Tosin Oluwatosin.

Adeyemi, however, said that David is at large, while Tosin has been arrested

The severed head was the third discovered within three weeks. It belongs to a 12 year-old victim, whose identity has not been revealed by the police.

The first two severed heads were recorded in the heat of the Ayede-Itaji land dispute.

The Police spokesman confirmed that Tosin was arrested with the head in Ifaki Ekiti, Ido/Osi Local Government Area of the state, following an intelligence report from an unidentified source.

“One of the suspects is on the run. The victim is about 12 years old. We are still looking for the severed body and we are also on the trail of the one at large.

“After investigation, the suspects will be charged to court,” he said.

The police spokesman, who decried incessant cases of beheading in the state, said the police would also investigate if the two brothers were involved in the first two incidents. (NAN) ARIS/MST

Dutse, Dec. Jan. 5, 2017 (NAN) The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it arrested 383 suspects and recovered 1.380,705.7 tons of assorted narcotics between January and December 2016 in Jigawa.

The NDLEA State Commander, Mr Abdullahi Abdul, disclosed this in a statement he issued on Thursday in Dutse.

Abdul said that the command had also convicted 84 drugs suspects to various jail terms within the period under review.

He added that some of the cases were still pending before a Federal High Court, Dutse.

The commandant further explained that the sum of N64,043, two vehicles, including one motorcycle, were forfeited to the Federal Government, being proceeds of drugs.

“The Jigawa command of the NDLEA within 2016, despite challenges faced, has achieved a lot in its drug war viz-a-viz arrest and seizure, prosecution and counselling.

“The command arrested 382 suspects from January to December 2016, while a total seizure quantity of of 1.380.705.7Ton of various types of illicit drugs was made within the period.

“The command also convicted 84 drug suspects to various jail terms, while other cases are still pending before the Federal High Court Dutse,” Abdul said.

According to him, the agency had also conducted Drug Education activities in the state, aimed at educating students and individuals of the dangers of drug abuse and trafficking.

“This is in view of the emphasis on Drug Demand Reduction aimed at creating public awareness, rehabilitation of users as well as enhancing activities of NGOs’ involvement in fighting drug menace.

“Drug Free Clubs were also established in various schools within the state,” he explained.

Abdul, therefore, called on the public to always give the command credible information that would assist it in tackling the menace of abuse of illicit drugs.

“The abuse of psychotropic substance and cough syrup is a worrisome development which the command is grappling with.

“Hence the need for all, including the traditional rulers, religious groups and CBOs to join hands in fighting the menace throughout the state,” he urged. (NAN)

Abuja, Jan. 3, 2017 (NAN) The Nigerian Navy (NN) said its patrol team, deployed by NNS PATHFINDER, has again arrested two barges at Taraba Jetty in Port Harcourt.

The Navy Director of Information, Rear Adm. Christian Ezekobe, said this in a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja.

According to Ezekobe, the arrest is due to their alleged involvement in illegal oil bunkering.

Ezekobe explained that one of the arrested barges had about 70,000 litres of suspected illegally refined AGO, while the other was carrying a mixture of AGO and water.

He added that the patrol team arrested another barge conveying about 200 MT of suspected illegally refined AGO at Owogoro Jetty in Port Harcourt.

In a related development, the patrol teams deployed by NNS DELTA for daily patrols, had continually secured shipping in and out of Warri axis.

“In the course of the patrol, the patrol team discovered and destroyed two illegal refineries together with an estimated 120MT of products suspected to be illegally refined AGO.

“And another 20MT of stolen crude oil at Bikpoku Creek/Asigbo Creek in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta,” he said.

Ezekobe said that another patrol team from NNS DELTA discovered and destroyed five illegal refineries with about 100MT of combined products at KO Creek in Warri South-West Local Government of Delta.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that these arrests were the seventh in the series of arrests made and the destruction of illegal refineries in the area in the last two days. (NAN)
