Ligue 1: Golovin double earns Monaco first win of the season

Paris, Sept. 24, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) AS Monaco’s Aleksandr Golovin scored twice as the principality side beat visiting Nice 3-1 in the Azurean derby in Ligue 1 on Tuesday to claim their first victory of the season.

Golovin found the net either side of Patrick Burner’s equaliser with Wissam Ben Yedder wrapping up the win late on to lift Monaco to 17th on six points from seven games.

The defeat left Nice in fourth place on 12 points.

Olympique de Marseille moved up to third, also on 12 points, despite being held to a 0-0 draw at bottom club Dijon.

Monaco’s victory was a relief for coach Leonardo Jardim, who would have come under more pressure with another mishap.

Russian midfielder Golovin opened the scoring in the 29th minute with a superb left-foot effort, only for Burner to level for the visitors nine minutes into the second half.

But Golovin scored again in the 74th, collecting an Islam Slimani cross in the area before flicking the ball past goalkeeper Walter Benitez.

French international Ben Yedder made sure there would be no late shock for the hosts when he added the third from close range after a Golovin through ball.

Earlier, Olympique de Marseille dropped points for the second game in a row when they were held at Dijon.

The Provence side, who were held by Montpellier on Saturday, dominated the first half but Dijon had the best chance seven minutes after the break when Bruno Ecuele-Manga’s header hit the post. (Reuters/NAN)

Ligue 1: Nantes pay final tribute to Sala, Monaco held by Montpellier

Paris, Feb. 10, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Nantes paid a final tribute to former striker Emiliano Sala in a 2-4 home defeat to Nimes in Ligue 1 on Sunday.

The defeat has come three days after the Argentine was confirmed dead in a plane crash.

Sala, 28, had been flying from Nantes in western France to Wales on Jan. 21 to make his debut for English Premier League (EPL) side Cardiff City.

The single-engined Piper Malibu aircraft had disappeared over the sea.

There was a minute of applause before kick-off.

A representative from Cardiff City came to La Beaujoire Stadium to hand the French club a shirt from the Welsh side.

La Beaujoire was at capacity after tickets were sold for nine euros (7.88 pounds) in reference to Sala’s shirt number.

Fans also chanted a song in memory of Sala in the ninth minute of the game.

Nantes took control of the match in the first half, opening a two-goal lead after a goal by Kalifa Coulibaly and a Majeed Waris penalty kick.

However, Nimes fought back after the break and prevailed thanks to goals by Baptiste Guillaume, Antonin Bobichon, Jordan Ferri and Sada Tihoub.

The result left the Canaries in 15th place with 24 points from 23 matches, five points above the relegation zone.

Elsewhere, Monaco thought they were snatching their second win in two league games under returning coach Leonardo Jardim.

But Andy Delort’s stoppage-time penalty kick salvaged a 2-2 home draw for Montpellier at home.

Gaetan Laborde had cancelled out Gelson Martins’s opener before Radamel Falcao had put the visitors ahead from close range in the 85th minute.

Ligue 1: Hapless Monaco lose again in 2-0 defeat by Dijon

Paris, Jan 26, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Managerless Monaco crashed to another defeat on Saturday, going down 2-0 away to Dijon the day before their former coach returns to the club to try and save them from relegation.

Leonardo Jardim will take charge again on Sunday, just three months after he was replaced by Thierry Henry who was himself sacked on Friday.

The club from the principality are one from bottom of Ligue 1 and desperately wanted points at the side immediately above them in the table.

But they were no match for a team that had won only once in their previous 17 league games.

South Korean Changhoon Kwon put the home side ahead after 24 minutes with his first league goal of the season.

Monaco’s task grew even harder after centre-back Naldo was shown a straight red on the hour mark for a bad tackle.

Naim Sliti then doubled Dijon’s lead nine minutes later to seal the points.

The result takes Dijon on to 20 points, five ahead of Monaco, who are a point above bottom club Guingamp, who lost 1-0 at home to Stade de Reims.

Strasbourg, who got a 90th-minute goal to beat Bordeaux 1-0, are in fifth, while Nice, who beat Olympique de Nimes 2-0, are sixth.

Monaco boost midfield options with Vainqueur signing

Monaco (France), Jan. 12, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Struggling AS Monaco followed up the signing of Cesc Fabregas by reinforcing their midfield with Frenchman William Vainqueur joining on loan from Antalyaspor until the end of the season.

Vainqueur, 30, currently has a calf problem but Monaco said on Saturday they had been won over by the motivation of the former Nantes, Standard liege, Dynamo Moscow and Roma player.

The arrival of the ex-France Under-21 international, who had a loan spell at Olympique de Marseille in 2016-17, comes after Spain international Fabregas signed a 3-1/2 year deal on Friday.

Fabregas leaves Chelsea to join Monaco

Paris, Jan. 11, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas has joined Ligue 1 side Monaco from English Premier League side Chelsea, the two clubs said on Friday.

“Cesc Fabregas has today completed a permanent transfer to Monaco,” Chelsea said on their website, just as Ligue 1 Monaco tweeted a video of Fabregas with a voice-over saying “now it’s time”.

The midfielder’s switch to the Ligue 1 club brings the curtain down on his four-and-a-half- year Chelsea career, a period in which he won four major trophies.

These are two English Premier League titles, one FA Cup and one League Cup, during a period when the Spaniard made 198 appearances for Chelsea and scored 22 goals.

“We thank Cesc for his wonderful service and wish him the very best of luck for the next chapter in what has been a fantastic career,’’ Chelsea FC wrote.

Fabregas arrived at Stamford Bridge as a 2012 European Championship and 2010 World Cup winner with Spain.

The midfielder departs England with the second-highest number of assists in Premier League history, 111, after recently making his 350th appearance in the competition during the game against Southampton.

He was also the fastest player to reach 100 Premier League assists, achieving the feat in just 293 matches.

Fabregas signed in the summer of 2014 as Jose Mourinho sought to add a creative presence in midfield.

This was after the departure of club legend Frank Lampard at the end of the previous season.

Fabregas is now joining up with Thierry Henry, a former teammate and current manager of the municipality club, who was the Spaniard’s captain at Arsenal.

He had joined Chelsea from Arsenal, having moved to England from La Masia, FC Barcelona’s youth academy, at age 16 in September 2003.(Reuters/NAN)

UEFA Champions League: Manchester City fight back to beat Monaco 5-3 in thriller

Abuja, Feb. 22, 2017 (NAN) Manchester City twice came from behind to beat Monaco 5-3 in a thrilling encounter in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first leg on Tuesday.

It was however a result which put Pep Guardiola’s side in a strong position to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

Raheem Sterling opened the scoring in the topsy turvy tie at the Etihad Stadium with a close-range finish, before ex-Manchester United striker Radamel Falcao headed in an equaliser.

Monaco’s teenage forward Kylian Mbappe then drove into the roof of the net before Willy Caballero prevented the visitors from going further ahead when he saved Falcao’s tame penalty kick.

Danijel Subasic let Sergio Aguero’s tame strike slip past him to make it 2-2 but Falcao’s exquisite chip restored Monaco’s lead.

However, City struck back in a grandstand finish as Aguero volleyed in an equaliser before John Stones tapped in from a corner.

And Leroy Sane added a fifth for the hosts when he fired in from Aguero’s pass.

The win means Monaco will have to score twice without reply in the return leg at Stade Louis II stadium on March 15 to deny City a place in the last eight.

The other round of 16 first leg tie saw Atletico Madrid score four away goals to take charge of their Champions League last-16 tie against Bayer Leverkusen with a 4-2 victory.

Saul Niguez gave the visitors the lead with a stunning strike, picking the ball up on the right before cutting inside and curling a left-footed shot into the top corner.

Antoine Griezmann doubled their advantage from Kevin Gameiro’s pass, after woeful defending by Leverkusen skipper Omer Toprak.

Wendell struck his own crossbar in clearing Felipe Luis’ cross and home goalkeeper Bernd Leno twice saved well from Griezmann.

But these were all an indication that Leverkusen were fortunate to go in at the break just two goals behind.

Karim Bellarabi pulled one back for Leverkusen early in the second half by finishing off a slick team move, but Gameiro’s penalty kick restored Atletico’s two-goal advantage.

Thereafter, Stefan Savic’s own goal reduced arrears once again.

Substitute Fernando Torres further strengthened Atletico’s grip on the tie when he nodded in a late fourth.
