Ighalo scores as Manchester United, Wolves, Roma move into last 16, FC Porto, Arsenal, Ajax out

Manchester (UK), Feb. 28, 2020 (Reuters/NAN) Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers cruised into the Europa League last 16 round with emphatic aggregate wins on Thursday, but while AS Roma squeezed through, Sporting and Porto were eliminated.

Manchester United breezed to a 6-1 aggregate win over Club Bruges after a 5-0 return leg rout of the Belgians at Old Trafford, with new signing Odion Ighalo among the scorers.

Wolves advanced with a 6-3 overall victory against Espanyol in spite of a 3-2 second-leg defeat in Spain.

Arsenal suffered a shock exit to Olympiakos Piraeus on away goals after a 2-1 extra-time home defeat.

The Portuguese trio of Benfica, Sporting and FC Porto as well as Ajax Amsterdam and Celtic were also eliminated.

Odion Ighalo celebrated his first start for Manchester United with his maiden goal for the club after Bruno

Fernandes had fired the home side ahead with a 27th-minute penalty kick.

The penalty kick had produced a red card for Club Bruges defender Simon Deli.

The centre-back was dismissed after he dived in goalkeeping fashion to handle a Daniel James shot before Fernandes sent Simon Mignolet the wrong way with the spot-kick.

Scot McTominay made it 3-0 on the night with a fine first-time shot from 18 metres just before the break.

And Brazilian midfielder Fred put the icing on the cake with a late brace for United, who won Europe’s second-tier competition in 2016.

Wolves took a 4-0 first-leg lead to Espanyol and never looked in danger as Adama Traore scrambled in a close-range effort.

Matt Doherty also scored as they twice cancelled out goals from Jonathan Calleri who scored a hat-trick.

AS Roma, 1-0 winners against Gent in the first leg, looked to have a struggle on their hands when Jonathan David leveled the tie on aggregate after 25 minutes.

However, Justin Kluivert eased the Serie A side’s nerves with a quick equaliser as they progressed.

Bayer Leverkusen blew FC Porto away with a 3-1 win on the road after taking a 2-1 lead in Germany last week.

They completed the job with goals from Lucas Alario, Kerem Demirbay and Kai Havertz, before Moussa Marega netted a consolation for the home side.

Sporting exited after losing 4-1 at Istanbul Basaksehir following extra time to go down 5-4 on aggregate.

This was after Edin Visca gave the hosts a lifeline with a late goal in normal time and then netted a penalty kick to take them through.

Vfl Wolfsburg beat Swedish side Malmo 3-0 away to breeze through 5-1 on aggregate.

FC Basel also progressed with a 1-0 home win over APOEL Nicosia for a 4-0 aggregate success.(Reuters/NAN)

Smalling scores, provides two assists as AS Roma thrump Brescia

Rome, Nov 24, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) AS Roma defender Chris Smalling scored and then provided two assists as his side thumped bottom-of-the-table Brescia 3-0 in Serie A on Sunday.

Brescia left Mario Balotelli on the bench after coach Fabio Grosso said the maverick striker had not put in enough effort in training during the week.

Even so, they almost took a first-half lead when Emanuele Ndoj’s shot was pushed away by Roma goalkeeper Pau Lopez and Alfredo Donnarumma went close after being allowed a free header at a corner.

Roma, fourth with 25 points, took full control after halftime and Smalling, on loan from Manchester United, broke the deadlock when he headed in from a corner in the 49th minute.

Eight minutes later, the Englishman headed down Justin Kluivert’s cross for his fellow centre defender Gianluca Mancini to volley home.
And he provided another headed assist for Edin Dzeko to add the third in the 66th minute.

In between, Nicolo Zaniolo, who scored his first Italy goals in their 9-1 thrashing of Armenia on Monday, had a goal disallowed after the ball went out of play in the buildup.

AS Roma breeze past Cagliari to go fourth in Serie A

Rome, April 27, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) AS Roma edged ahead in Serie A’s tight race for Champions League qualification with a 3-0 home win over Cagliari on Saturday, which sent Claudio Ranieri’s side into fourth place.

Federico Fazio and Javier Pastore scored inside the opening eight minutes before Aleksandar Kolarov added a third late on as the visitors offered little resistance.

The victory means Roma now have 58 points, two ahead of AC Milan and Atalanta on 56 each.

However, Milan and Atalanta can restore a one-point lead over the capital club by beating Torino and Udinese respectively in their league fixtures over the next two days. (Reuters/NAN)

UEFA Champions League: FC Porto go through with extra time VAR penalty kick

Porto (Portugal), March 7, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) FC Porto converted a penalty kick awarded following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review three minutes from the end of extra time to beat AS Roma 3-1 on Wednesday.

The win gave them a 4-3 aggregate victory to advance into the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, after having lost 1-2 in the first leg.

Fernando went down as he tried to meet Maxi Pereira’s low shot across the face of the goal and, after studying the pitchside monitor, the referee judged in his favour.

He adjudged that his shirt had been tugged by Alessandro Florenzi.

Alex Telles emphatically converted the penalty kick to give Porto a win and heap further pressure on Roma coach Eusebio Di Francesco.

Italian media had said before the match that he was fighting to keep his job.

Tiquinho Soares put Porto ahead in the 26th minute before Daniele De Rossi levelled with a penalty kick before half-time.

Moussa Marega put the Portuguese champions back in front in the 52nd minute, and both sides failed to find the range again thereafter until the extra time decision.(Reuters/NAN)

Zaniolo strikes twice for AS Roma to beat FC Porto

Rome, Feb. 13, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Two goals from teenager Nicolo Zaniolo earned AS Roma a 2-1 win against FC Porto in their UEFA Champions League last 16 first leg fixture on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old continued his superb breakthrough season by finding the net twice in six second half minutes to become the youngest Italian to score two goals in a Champions League match.

FC Porto substitute Adrian Lopez, however, quickly responded with what could prove to be a crucial away goal.

The result ended a five-match winning run in Europe for FC Porto, who will welcome Roma to the Estadio do Dragao for the second leg on March 6.(Reuters/NAN)

Milan (Italy), Aug. 19, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) AS Roma striker Edin Dzeko scored with a memorable volleyed to give his side a 1-0 win at Torino in their opening Serie A game on Sunday.

The brilliant goal followed a mazy run by debutant Justin Kluivert.

Dzeko’s remarkable goal in the 89th minute rewarded Roma for their persistence after they hit the woodwork three times although the battling hosts also struck the post and had a goal disallowed.

The game appeared to be heading for a draw until substitute Kluivert collected the ball in midfield and slipped past two Torino defenders and forced his way to the byline.

The teenager is the son of former Barcelona and Netherlands forward Patrick Kluivert.

The 19-year-old crossed deep into the area where Dzeko met the ball with the inside of his left foot.

He sent a deft volley into the far corner of the net from a seemingly impossible angle.
Kluivert was signed from Ajax during the close season.

Aleksandar Kolarov and Dzeko both hit the post during the first half and the Bosnian again struck the woodwork from a free kick in the second half.

Torino midfielder Tomas Rincon also struck the woodwork in the first half with a dipping shot and Iago Falque had a goal disallowed for offside following a VAR review.

Midfielder Javier Pastore and goalkeeper Robin Olsen also made their debuts for Roma, who were Champions League semi-finalists last year.

UEFA punishes Roma, Bilbao, Spartak over fan violence

Nyon (Switzerland), June 5, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) UEFA has punished Italian club AS Roma, Spain’s Athletic Bilbao and Russia’s Spartak Moscow for fan violence in the Champions League and Europa League, the ruling body said on Tuesday.

Roma have also been handed a two-match ban on their supporters at away games, with the suspension for the second match deferred for a probationary period of two years.

Two Roma fans were arrested by police during the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Liverpool in April.

This was after a fan of the English team, Sean Cox, suffered serious injuries in an attack.

UEFA also fined the Italian club 50,000 euros.

Bilbao and Spartak have been sanctioned for fan violence during their round-of-32 Europa League tie in Spain in February which resulted in the death of a policeman.

The officer died in hospital after suffering a heart attack when police were trying to stop street battles between supporters in the northern Spanish city.(Reuters/NAN)

Roma warm up for Liverpool clash with 3-0 win at SPAL

Rome, April 21, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Roma enjoyed a perfect dress rehearsal for the first leg tie of their UEFA Champions League semi-final fixture with Liverpool on Saturday.

Radja Nainggolan and Patrick Schick struck after a Francesco Vicari own goal to give them a 3-0 win at SPAL in Serie A.

The result left Roma third on 67 points from 34 games, three ahead of city rivals Lazio and four ahead of Inter Milan who both have a game in hand.

It is a huge victory in the three-way battle for two UEFA Champions League slots.

With one eye on Tuesday’s clash with Liverpool at Anfield, Roma coach Eusebio di Francesco left the bulk of his regular starters on the bench.

However, the makeshift side delivered with a classy performance at relegation-threatened SPAL.

After a cagey opening half-hour, Vicari fired Roma ahead in the 33rd minute when he poked the ball into his own net from seven metres.

The error was committed in a futile attempt to divert a Lorenzo Pellegrini pass to the advancing Kevin Strootman.

SPAL goalkeeper Alex Meret made two fine saves before halftime but was powerless in the 52nd minute, when Nainggolan unleashed a swerving volley into the bottom right corner.

Pellegrini provided another superb assist in the 59th for Schick to head home from close range as Roma turned on the heat.

Stephan El Shaarawy missed several chances including a diving header which hit the post.

Roma goalkeeper Alison Becker was rarely called into action but made two good saves to deny Alberto Paloschi and Mirko Antenucci.

The defeat leaves SPAL in 17th place on 29 points from 34 games, one ahead of Crotone who have a game in hand.

In the day’s other matches, Sassuolo were at home to Fiorentina, while AC Milan faced bottom team Benevento in the evening kick-off.

The round’s stand-out fixture is Sunday’s potential title showdown as champions and leaders Juventus (85 points) take on second-placed Napoli (81) at home.(Reuters/NAN)
