Association wants Kaduna Govt to provide free education for the blind

Zaria (Kaduna State), March 15, 2017 (NAN) The National Association for the Blind (NAB), Kaduna North Senatorial District chapter, has appealed to the state government to provide free education for its members.

Malam Dalhatu Muhammad, its chairman, made the plea in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Zaria, Kaduna State.

“Providing free education to the visually impaired, from primary level to university, will not only give them a sense of belonging, but make them self-reliant.

“It is very sad to note that blind people in Kaduna State pay more than N20,000 to write senior secondary certificate examinations organised by WAEC and NECO.

“It means that those of us, who have no means of paying, have to resort to begging.

“Many blind people you see roaming about the streets are not happy to beg. They are merely desperate to survive because they have nobody to support them.

“This scenario will continue for a very long time because many blind people are not being assisted by anyone,” he said.

Muhammad also pleaded with government to build rehabilitation centres and schools for the blind in the senatorial district so as to encourage them to study

He said that the northern senatorial district had “only one” rehabilitation centre, compared to other senatorial districts in the state.

“The central and southern senatorial districts have four rehabilitation centres/schools each, but we have only one rehabilitation centre cited at Alhudahuda College, Zaria,” he said.

According to him, the centre in Zaria caters for  male blind persons only.

“It means that there is no provision for the female blind person in the zone.

“The situation has forced the females among us to travel to far distances in search of education and other facilities; that requires a huge amount of money,” he said. (NAN)

Keffi (Nasarawa State), March 6, 2017 (NAN) The Association of Nigerian Geographers (ANG) says it will honour two ministers, a governor and two others for their outstanding contributions to national development.

Prof. Nasiru Idris, the Chairman, Central Local Organising Committee of the association’s 58th AGM, disclosed this to newsmen on Monday in Keffi, Nasarawa State.

Idris said the beneficiaries would be presented with merit awards at the ANG forthcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM).

He listed other recipients as the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Mr Usani Usani Uguru, and the Minister of State for Environment, Alhaji Ibrahim Jibrin.

Gov. Bindow Jibrilla of Adamawa would also be honoured at the AGM, said the chairman.

The other awardees include Prof. Mohammed Mainoma, Vice Chancellor, Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), and Late Dr Akwa Labaris, pioneer Head of Department of Geography, NSUK.

Idris, who is also the Head of Geography Department, NSUK, added that more than 500 participants were expected at the event from within and outside the country.

According to him, the theme of the association’s 58th AGM is: “Geography, Nation-Building and Environmental Change’’.

He said the event is scheduled to hold between March 12 and 17, at the NSUK.

“The conference is expecting over 500 participants from within and outside the country, and we are expecting their arrival from March 12th, 2017, while the opening ceremony will take place on March 13,’’ Idris said.

He said that the event would be chaired by the Minister of Water Resources and Rural Development, Alhaji Suleiman Adamu, while the Minister of State for Environment, Alhaji Ibrahim Jibrin, would deliver the key note address at the event.

He added that the plenary sessions at the event would feature important issues that would be handled by senior geographers, among others.

Idris also said that the conference would feature secondary school competition to select young geographers that would represent Nigeria at the International Geography Olympiad (iGeo) in Serbia, Belgrade, later in the year.

He added that participants would have a field trip to areas of geographical interest and exhibition to complement the theories in paper presentations and the practical aspect. (NAN)

Brinin Kebbi, Jan. 22, 2017 (NAN) The Association for the Promotion of Livestock production in the African Sahel and Savannah regions says it will enlighten livestock breeders on modern livestock production.

The President of the association, Dr Buba Jalo, who led a delegation to Kebbi State, disclosed this in Birnin Kebbi on Sunday after a closed door meeting with Gov. Atiku Bagudu.

He told newsmen after the meeting that the training would end the incessant clashes between farmers and livestock producers.

He said the association would ensure that farmers and livestock breeders embraced dialogue in dispute resolution and peaceful coexistence.

“The association has its headquarters in Ouagadougou with offices in Burkina Faso, Garoua, Republic of Cameroon that over see the activities of the association in Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Central African Republic.

“Other centres are located Dori, Burkina Faso; covering Burkina Faso, Niger, Benin Republic, Togo and Mali as well as the centre in Pieres, Senegal covering Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea Conakry and Mauritania,” he added.

He explained that the leadership of the association was in Brinin Kebbi to inaugurate the state branch of the association. (NAN)
